July 19, 1854-Dated Slavery-related Letter regarding a Captured "Mute" Enslaved Man in the hands of the jailor at Upper Marlborough, Prince George County, Maryland, from "Virginia House" Alexandria, VA., Choice Very Fine.
This July 19, 1854 Autograph Letter Signed, "John H. Carter," at Alexandria, Virginia, to Samuel Arroll Marsteller, 1 page, measuring 10" x 8" with an attached Integral Postal Address Leaf, well written in colorful rich blue ink on light blue wove period paper having choice overall eye appeal. This letter informs Marsteller that the jailor at Upper Marlborough, Prince George County, Maryland, has his "stray negro man (the mute)... now in legal custody." Writing in an unmistakably facetious, mocking register, Carter continues, "Well knowing your exceeding personal feeling & Regard for the afflicted... who would be much better employed in harvesting in the sight of cooling Springs, and under the Tenor notes of your musical voice than to be breathing the foetid air of a Dungeon... during these Cholera times."
The passage trades on the cruelty of the situation for comic effect, framing the Enslaved man's captivity in a disease-ridden jail as an inconvenience to Marsteller's sensibilities rather than a hardship to the man himself, a tone that lays bare the casual dehumanization threaded through everyday Slaveholder correspondence. Overall, clean and easily readable with excellent historic period content.
