19th century oil painting on board, portrait of the PACKET SHIP TUSCARORA. Has old labels verso with artist name R. SALOMON (this is the artist's birth name & correct spelling). Also has Penn. Museum of Art label with provenance from George H. Stuart 3rd (relative of Geo. Stuart, founder of YMCA, a portrait of which is listed at lot #176). The painting is 13.5 x 20 inches, framed 17 x 24 inches and has allover craquelure to the surface (no issues under blacklight). Unsigned on front. NOTE: Robert Salmon 1744-1845 was a highly-sought after English marine painter who emigrated to Boston in 1828, leaving the country in 1842 with little record of his later life). The packet ship Tuscarora was part of the Cope Line, a Philadelphia-based shipping company owned by Francis & Thomas Cope, which operated a fleet of passenger sailing vessels between Liverpool, England, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
