"Rev. J. Goldsmith" was actually a highly successful pseudonym used by the radical British author and publisher Sir Richard Phillips to market educational books. The frontispiece features an engraved "geographical clock" or dial. This was originally printed with a moveable, rotating paper circle (volvelle) pinned to the center to show relative times around the world. In most surviving schoolbooks, this rotating part was torn off or lost. Having a fully working, intact rotating dial instantly pushes the book to the top of the valuation scale. The 1819 edition (published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown) was issued with several hand-colored or engraved fold-out maps—including the Earth, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the British Islands.
