November 5, 1806-Dated Newspaper, Report on: LEWIS & CLARK RETURN TO ST. LOUIS From Their Expedition, "Connecticut Courant," Hartford, Very Fine.
November 5, 1806-Dated issue of "The Connecticut Courant", Hartford, CT, 4 pages, complete, measuring about 12-1/2" x 19-1/2". Untrimmed right edge, some tone along a vertical fold on the top half of the front page. The lead column on Page 2 reports on the arrival of Lewis and Clark in St. Louis, after their 2-1/2 year expedition. Includes: "It is, with the sincerest pleasure, that we announce to our fellow citizens, the arrival of CAPTAIN LEWIS, with his exploring party, at St. Lewis [sic].
The President of the United States has received a letter from him dated at St. Louis, September 23, at which place himself, Captain Clark and their party arrived that day. They had passed the preceding winter at a place which he calls Fort Clatsop, near the mouth of the Columbia river.... Capt. Lewis expected to remain at St. Louis some days to settle with and discharge his men, and would then set out for Washington... He is accompanied by the great Mandan Chief, who is on a visit to Washington. Capt. Lewis speaks of his colleague, Captain Clarke, in the most affectionate terms, and declares his equal title to whatever merit may be ascribed to the success of this enterprize."
The Lewis and Clark Expedition was instrumental in opening up America's westward expansion and was equivalent then to America's landing on the Moon over 160 years later.
