East Asia, China, Ming-Qing Dynasty, ca. 1600–1799 CE. A serene arhat carved from warm reddish sandstone sits in quiet devotion, both feet planted on the ground and palms pressed together at the chest in the anjali mudra, gesture of greeting and gratitude. The bald, smooth-domed head, softly furrowed brow, and gently smiling mouth convey the composed inner life of an enlightened disciple. A long monastic robe drapes across the body in fluid, deeply cut folds, closing at the chest and pooling over the plinth in rhythmic pleats. Traces of green mineral staining linger in the recesses, evidence of age and burial. As a lohan (Sanskrit arhat), the figure represents a perfected follower of the Buddha who has attained nirvana, one of the venerated worthies who populated temple halls in sets, guarding the dharma and offering the faithful a human model of spiritual attainment. Size: 12.9" W x 26.8" H x 9.9" D (32.8 cm W x 68.1 cm H x 25.1 cm D).

Lohans (from the Sanskrit arhat, "worthy one") were most often venerated in China in a canonical group of sixteen, later expanded to eighteen and then to five hundred. Temple halls dedicated to them, the luohan tang, arranged the figures in ordered ranks, each with a distinct physiognomy and attribute, so that the faithful might contemplate the diversity of paths to enlightenment. The anjali mudra seen here, palms joined at the heart, is among the most universal Buddhist gestures, signalling reverence and the unity of the devotee with the sacred.
