(MAINE / Fr. & Indian War) Offered here is a 1+pp. MDS, 6 1/4 x 7 1/2 (folded sheet), dated March 14, 1750, a York County, Province of Massachusetts-Bay (now Maine) land transfer, wherein "... Samuel Shaw of York in the County of York Yeoman in Consideration of Jonathan Bean of York aforesaid Gent. his haveing this Day conveyed to me hisi Eight Shares in the Lot of Land called Number Eight in the First Division of the stated Commons...[and Shaw now conveys to Bean]... Eight Shares in the Lot of Land called Number Five in the Second Division of the Comons aforesaid...," signed Samuel Shaw, witnessed by Joseph Jenkins, Saml. Milberry, Jun. (1696-1777) attested to by Dan. Moulton (1717-1815), who signs twice, as Justice of the Peace and Register. Folds, minor edge wear, light toning, otherwise very good. This Commons referred to was probably land at what is now Buxton, Maine, since Captain Bean retired there in 1760. Jonathan Bean was a Captain in the Indian Wars of 1747-8 and his father and grandfather were also distinguished military men, both of York also. Capt. JONATHAN BANE, son of Capt. Lewis, was born in York as early as 1693; he married Sarah, the eldest daughter of Peter Nowel,of York; she received one hundred and fifty pounds by will of her father as “Sarah Bane” in 1738. Jonathan Bane was a man of affairs in York as early as 1730, and his name appears on many early documents, showing how many positions of trust he was called to fill even when a young man; indicating that the public had confidence in his abilities and his integrity. He was captain as early as 1743. He seems to have continued his residence in York until 1756, when he appears as a justice of the peace in Narragansett, No. 1, now Buxton; there he bound himself to settle lot 5, in range B, of the 1st division. He was called to command at the Saco river block-house and made his home there for a number of years. For several years he had filled important positions in connection with Indian affairs on the frontier, having acted as commissioner. He received by his father’s will, as eldest son, “land bought of Mr. Gooch”; half of “the lower pasture” and a third part of “the fresh meadows that he in ye woods.”
