1707 Dated, Engraved, Carved, and Silver and Gold Inlaid Flintlock Pistol by Johann Strans This pistol has a very Dutch feel and is inlaid with "JOHANN STRANS" on the barrel and "MOCKBA/1707" on the lock. These components are also accented by gold and silver inlaid floral designs. The lock has the Dutch/French "banana" style profile. The swamped barrel is rifled which is unusual for this early period and as a blade front sight. The brass barrel tang has a groove for a rear sight, and the other brass fittings have floral and martial themed relief engraving. There are some small crude marks and notches on the concealed areas of a few of the components (likely assembly marks). The stock has Baroque style carving, silver wire inlays, and a bone nose cap. The thumb plate has an "EA" monogram. Mockba is Russian for Moscow, and Johann Strans (or Stranz) is a name of Germanic rather than Slavic origin, but little about the maker is known. He may have lived in Moscow's German Quarter which was also home to Peter the Great's long time mistress, Anna Mons. Dutch gunmakers and artisans are well-documented as having worked for the Tsar and the aristocracy leading many Russian arms from the period to have more Dutch and German designs. The Bulavin Rebellion and Great Northern War were both being fought by the Russian Empire under Peter the Great in 1707, and Peter was allied with several of the Germanic states. Manufacturer: European Model: Flintlock BBL: 11 1/2 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 62 Finish: bright/gold Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good. The barrel and lock have once cleaned gray patina and retain virtually all of their inlays. The barrel surfaces also have patches of light pitting. The brass has a lightly aged patina throughout as do the silver inlays. The revarnished stock is very good with crisp carving, some slight chips and cracks at the edges, and minor marks throughout. The lock is mechanically fine and has a refaced frizzen suggesting extensive use in period. The engraving and markings are crisp.
