Ca. 1500 - 1550 CE. Caribbean Sea, Hispaniola, early Spanish Colonial period. Remarkable early exploration period copper jug of a type you would normally find in Spanish ship wrecks. Hammered copper of bulbous form with straight neck and slightly pinched spout, copper strap handle attached with two large rivets.

Parallels are known from Iberian and New World contexts, including shipboard assemblages of the 1622 fleets - for example pieces in the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha - as well as Spanish colonial household finds.

Provenance: Private Massachusetts collection via family descent. Owner's father spent considerable time in Hispaniola in the 70's looking for Spanish treasure and Taino artifacts
