West Africa, Niger Delta, Mali, Djenne Peoples, Middle Niger Civilization, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A miniature bronze vessel and copper ornament. One is a globular pot featuring a lug handle at the rim. The second is a tubular, hollow object with openings at both ends and applied nodules decorating its surface. This enigmatic piece contains the preserved remnants of a textile fabric within its hollow interior, leading to the speculation that it functioned as a form of adornment, possibly a large bead, although it also resembles a goblet in shape. Size of larger: 0.8" W x 1.4" H (2 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California, USA collection, acquired July 7, 2002; ex-The Niger Bend, Chittenango, New York, USA
