Northern Europe, likely French or Franco-Flemish, ca. 1500–1550 CE. A dead Christ lies cradled across his mother's lap, the pale carnation of his flesh set against the deep murrey of the Virgin's robe and the pot-metal blue of her mantle, the scene resting on a green ground of silver-stained acanthus and reserved grasses. This is a Lamentation, the Pietà of late medieval devotion, its figural group carrying the hand of the early 16th century: sanguine modeling of the skin, silver-yellow reserved into scrolling halos and hair, and a naturalism marking the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance in the workshops of the north. The blackletter banderole overhead preserves the words "a dieu," a farewell to God, its neighboring letters marked with the nasal suspension bars of period abbreviation. Size of stained glass: 19.1" W x 21.8" H (48.5 cm W x 55.4 cm H); with frame: 21.5" W x 25.1" H (54.6 cm W x 63.8 cm H).

Panels of this kind rarely survive as their glaziers first set them. Church windows were dismantled through the upheavals of the Reformation, revolution, and later restoration, and by the 19th century a lively antiquarian trade had grown up around the recovered glass, gathering figural fragments and squaring them into portable, framed panels for private collectors and the great historicist interiors of the age. This piece bears that honorable history openly. The core Lamentation is authentic 16th-century work, its mending leads tracing the passage of centuries across the composition, while the upper register gathers period fragments of related date, a banderole, an inscribed block, silver-stained foliage, and a grisaille architectural console, each a genuine survival in its own right. The result is a panel that is thoroughly of the 16th century in substance, assembled with the connoisseur's eye of a later age, and all the more characterful for having lived several lives before arriving at this one. Set now in a collector's wooden frame, it reads at the window as it was always meant to, a quiet meditation on grief rendered luminous by light.

  • Condition: Area of loss on Christ's face as shown. Upper area has been repaired from composite pieces; all of time period stated, but placed together at a later time period. Some rubbing to pigments in areas and slight splitting and abrasions to wooden frame. Otherwise, very nice presentation with good remaining detail and rich patina. Suspension wire on top for display.
