  • This type is the very first patagon, established by the new governor of the Spanish Netherlands, Archduke Albert VII of Habsburg. It is also called Albertusthaler in the Holy Empire but also thaler with the Burgundian cross in France. Valued at 48 patards and minted with a lower denomination than the reichthaler, (9 ½ per fine marc weight instead of 9) it was soon very popular in the Baltic economy and became the main currency of exchange in this region in the 17th century.
