Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sukhothai Period, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 14th to 16th century CE. A splendid and sizeable buffware pottery jar with robust shoulders, flared walls, and a flat circular base - creating a magnificent silhouette. A stout, corseted neck leads up to a dramatically flared lip which is curled inwards at its end creating a graceful rim. The vessel's shoulders have been incised with a minimalist linear motif, including tightly spaced narrow bands, and prevailing registers of undulating lines which encircle it entirely. A series of 4 petite, nub-like handles also embellish the shoulder, all equidistantly spaced around the neck. The walls are well constructed and thick in form - adding to the overall grandeur of its presence and build. An impressive example! Size: 10.4" Diameter x 12.2" H (26.4 cm x 31 cm)

Provenance: private Dallas, Texas, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery, Louisville, Colorado, USA; ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
