Central Asia, Persia, Nishapur, ca. 900–1200 CE. A broad earthenware dish coated in a turquoise alkaline glaze, its wide flaring rim encircling a shallow, gently sloping well. The interior carries incised radial strokes around the cavetto and a band of hatched ornament along the rim, decoration typical of the ceramic workshops that flourished at Nishapur under Samanid and later Seljuk patronage. Ware of this type served both domestic and display purposes, its copper-derived color prized across the eastern Islamic world. The surface today shows the softened, mineral-crusted patina of long burial, with areas of the glaze and body reconstituted to restore the vessel's original form and profile. Size: 13" Diameter x 3" H (33.0 cm D x 7.6 cm H).

From the collection of Eugene Rotberg (1930-2025), longtime vice president and treasurer of the World Bank, noted collector of Asian art, and a figure widely regarded as one of the most influential in international finance of the late 20th century.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, from the estate of Eugene and Iris Rotberg, acquired from Iran in 1974
