A.J. Beals (Dr. Albert J. Beals) was a prominent 19th-century American daguerreotypist (early photographer) who operated a highly successful photographic studio at 156 Broadway, New York City during the 1846-1854 timeframe. Beals was known for delicately hand-tinting his photographs, often using fine gold paint to make jewelry, buttons, or belt buckles stand out on his subjects. This represents the "Golden Age" of the daguerreotype. This size is significantly scarcer than the common 1/6 plate, as it was much more expensive to produce. The "tinted cheeks" and gold-painted jewelry indicate a premium service. Artists used fine powder pigments and gum Arabic to add lifelike color and status to the monochrome image. An attributed A.J. Beals half-plate of this caliber is a premier collector's item. Half-plate daguerreotypes of couples in full cases with strong condition and hand-tinting typically command between $400 and $1,200+.
