Bryan joined the Marines in 1980 and attended his first auction in 1984 in Jacksonville, NC. He attended so regularly he was asked by the auctioneer to be a floor person, displaying and describing items up for auction. He had gotten the 'auction bug' and eagerly worked two auctions a week for over a year before being transferred by the Marines out of state. Eventually landing in Virginia Beach in 1987, Bryan became a registered auctioneer and opened Atlantic Coast Auctions & Antiques, where he conducted regular live auctions on half the building, while operating an antique store on the other. Transferring again in 1990, he closed shop and practiced his auctioneer skills from California to Ohio, while still on active duty. After hearing of eBay in 1997, he became a seller while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, selling primarily Japanese art and antiques. When he returned to San Diego, he continued to sell on eBay and conduct occasional live charity and fund-raising auctions. Bryan retired from the Marines in 2003 after 23 years and worked as a government contractor for several years and eventually as a government civil servant, resigning in May of 2013.

Bryan opened McDaniel Auction Center in Manassas in September of 2013 and conducted at least one, sometimes two and occasionally three live auctions a week. At the end of the three-year lease, Bryan began conducting online (internet bidding only) auctions, which have proven to more effective and efficient. Having operated out of two warehouses in Manassas, he has down-sized to one in Sterling, Virginia, where he accepts consignments and conducts regular online auctions.
