HERE IS SOME HISTORY OF THE HOUSE OF WHICH WE WILL BE SELLING ITEMS FROM BELOW.
A HISTORY OF THE BAKER-HESTER HOUSE < \ \J ' '10
C |
608 VANCE STREET . I i
REIDSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA - Jz^ y'
BY ROBERT W. CARTER, JR.
This two story brick house with bay windows is located next to the Lone Star Masonic Temple. The builder of the house William G. Jennings purchased lot number 28 for $400.00 from James M. Harris on May 27, 1887, on what was then the western edge of Reidsville. In October 1887 Jennings ran the
following advertisement in the Reidsville Times, "Jennings & Gunn - manufacturers
o and contractors of all kinds of Brick and Brick Work."' The Mr. Gunn mentioned
in the advertisement was Jennings' son-in-law, Walter Gunn, who later lived and farmed in the Gunntown area of Rockingham County. On May 29, 1889, the Reidsville Review stated that, "Mr. W. G. Jennings furnished the (new) Cotton mill (with) 400,000 brick. He can (now) make 20,000 (brick) a day."3
f Between the time Jennings purchased lot 28 in May 1887 and March 1890 he
completed the brick house. He gave a deed of trust on the house on March 9, 1890, that stated the brick house was now occupied as his residence.
The Jennings Brickyard was located on what was then the southwest border of Reidsville on land owned by J. C. Walton. It was not until February 19, 1898, that W. G. Jennings purchased the seven acre Brickyard tract from Walton.
By 1900 Jennings decided to sell his Reidsville property and move to Guilford County. On March 11, 1900, he sold his brickyard to Jonathan Robinson and J. W. Jennings. On March 12, 1900, he sold his brick home to J. M. Sullivan for $1250.00.6
Sullivan owned the Jennings brick house until October 3, 1905, when he sold the property to Avery Baker. On December 15, 1913, Avery Baker sold the house
to his father George W. Baker. George W. Baker, a merchant and farmer at Baker's
(' 7
v_ Crossroads, moved his family to the Jennings brick house. George W. Baker died
in 1931 and his wife, the former Mary Madison, died in 1934. In 1935 two of the
- 2 -
Baker's daughters, Miss Mary M. Baker and Mrs. Maude Hester, purchased the J brick house from the other Baker heirs and continued living in the house for many years. After Mrs. Hester's death the Bakers sold the property on May 2, 1959, to Jerry Wagoner, a Reidsville realtor. The brick house has since been used as rental property."
