Lot: 511 - Francis Nowalk Blue Mirrored Pedestal Table

Francis J. Nowalk (American/Pittsburgh, PA, 1928-2024) custom designed blue mirrored pedestal table. Wooden black painted base, faceted blue mirrored edge, gold metal trim. Gold tone metal ladder-form center element designed to support a floral centerpiece. Table 29 x 47 inches. The ladder-form center element is 37.5 inches in height. While earning his way through Duquesne University in 1948, Francis J. Nowalk opened a small lighting business to capitalize on an early interest in lighting design. Since that time, he has been recognized as one of the highest skilled metal craft experts in Western Pennsylvania. His work in design and restoration can be found in public and private buildings across the region including Heinz Hall, the Duquesne Club, Frick Museum, the Arcade Shops, St. Paul's Cathedral, Rolling Rock Country Club, Allegheny Country Club, the Andy Warhol Museum, and countless residences. Provenance: Commissioned by Louis Talotta for a prominent Pittsburgh family.

An important and influential multiple medium artist (painting, drafting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video, performance), activist, writer, public speaker, educator, museum curator and leader in the aboriginal art community, Joane Cardinal-Schubert was born in Red Deer, Alberta and died in Calgary, Alberta, where she had lived for most of her life. Her art education includes studies in painting, printmaking and multimedia at the Alberta College of Art [now the Alberta College of Art and Design], Calgary (1962 - 1962 and c.1966 - 1968) where she earned a certificate in printmaking and painting; the University of Alberta, Edmonton (1973); and, graduation with a BFA from the University of Calgary in 1977. She also earned a Certificate in Arts Management from the Banff Centre School of Management, Banff, Alberta in 1983. A central figure in Canadian aboriginal art for the last two decades of her life, she was a member of a plethora of activist and art organizations including the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In addition to numerous museum exhibitions across Canada, her works have been featured in exhibitions at important venues in the USA, France, Russia, Taiwan, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, Korea and elsewhere. Her works are in the permanent collections of many major museums such as the National Museum of the American Indian (Washington, D.C.), the Canadian Museum of History (National Capital Region), and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).

Laffranchi, Renato (Italian/Rivarolo Mantovano, b. 1923), Cat, 1967, mixed media on board, signed and dated at lower right. Gold leaf cat sitting at center. Laffranchi was born in 1923 in Rivarolo Mantovano (MN), completed his classical studies in Brescia, subsequently entering the city's Diocesan Seminary for the theological course and being ordained a priest in 1946. As a self-taught man he tackled the problems and issues of painting, staging his first solo exhibition in 1954 in the rooms of the Brescian Artists Association. He extensively practices panel painting, mosaic, fresco and stained glass. His artistic activity has its roots in the painting of the early twentieth century, with a particular focus on German expressionism and above all on the irreverent and polemical works of Grosz and Dix. Mabel Beatrice Holtz Landaker was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 11, 1902. She specialized in painting impressionist portraits and still life works. She was also quite skilled in ceramic pottery work. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, and the Carmel Art Institute. Landaker exhibited her works at the Carmel Art Association gallery, the De Young Museum, the Madonna Festival in Los Angeles, the Monterey County Fair, the City of San Francisco, the Society of Western Artists, and the Biltmore Galleries in Los Angeles. Her works are included in many private collections worldwide.

Includes: Reuben Aaron, Miller (American/Georgia, 1912-2006), Untitled, 20th century, painted tin cut-out, depicting an individual with upstretched arms, signed on the verso, 10.5 x 4.5 inches. Miller was a self-taught folk artist, best known for his whirligigs, metal cutouts, and drawings. Miller began producing outsider art late in life, placing hundreds of his completed works on his property, as well as selling them on the roadside. His work gained wider recognition in the 1980s, when it was featured in a music video, and subsequently exhibited in museums of art. Widely collected, and in constant demand, Miller is acknowledged as one of the more notable folk artists in the United States. Matthews, Betty Sue (American/Alabama, 1944-2018), Untitled, 20th Century, 2- sided painted tin cut-out, depicting a figure in a polka-dot dress, signed at front, 10 x 7 inches. Matthews was born in the small town of Brundidge, southwest of Troy, Alabama, in 1944, and lived there most of her life. She later moved to Tuscaloosa, where she died in 2018. She created paintings of people she knew and animals she saw on flattened cardboard boxes, discarded furniture, and tin siding which she cut with an ax and shaped with clippers. She frequently painted on both sides to illustrate the front and back of the same individual. As an esteemed guest artist at the Kentuck Festival in Northport, Alabama, Matthews sold her artworks alongside luminaries including the Rev. Howard Finster, Della Wells, and Purvis Young for many years. Even within the vernacular tradition of painted tin cutouts created by artists such as Thornton Dial, Sam Doyle, R. A. Miller, Missionary Mary Proctor, and others, Matthews' work stands out for her preference for creating likenesses of everyday people she knew rather than archetypes or cultural/historical figures. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at many museums and can be found in the collections of the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope, the International Arts Center at Troy University, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, and numerous private collections (Bio from Maus Contemporary).

She worked for a time as an agent/broker for artists such as Constantin Brancusi and Joan Miró. In the autumn of 1951 she was invited by Dorothea Tanning to go on a weekend trip. It was on that trip that she once again met Duchamp, and romance developed shortly thereafter. They were both avid chess players. Teeny and Duchamp married in New York City on January 16, 1954. They were together until his death in 1968. Henri Matisse was very fond of his daughter in law and this portrait depicts her.

Moskowitz, Ira (Polish/American, 1912-2021), Rabbi, mid to late 20th century, ink, pencil, and watercolor on wove paper, signed at lower right. Sheet 24.5 x 19 inches, floated, matted, behind plexiglass, and in a 31. x 25.5 inch dark wood frame. The following is from Fred McCraw, art writer: Moskowitz was born in Galicia, Poland in 1912, emigrating with his family to New York in 1927. He enrolled at the Art Student's League and studied there from 1928-31. In 1935, he traveled to Paris and then lived until 1937 in what is now Israel. He returned in 1938 to marry artist Anna Barry in New York. The couple soon visited Taos and Santa Fe in New Mexico, returning there for extended periods until in 1944 they moved there permanently and stayed until 1949. During this time, Moskowitz received a Guggenheim fellowship (in 1943). While Moskowitz devoted much of his life to the production of Judaic art, his New Mexico period was especially productive of other work. His New Mexico art consists mostly of 'Regionalist' subjects depicting both the New Mexico landscape and life within the state's three cultures. He especially focused on pueblo life. He and Anna also visited and sketched across the border in Old Mexico. While in the Southwest, Moskowitz flourished as a printmaker, yet continued to produce oils and watercolors as well. After leaving the Southwest, printmaking remained a major part of his life and art. But his focus drastically changed as to subject. Later works of Moskowitz depict religious (Judaic) subjects primarily. These works were well received early on and Moskowitz was content to stay with them the rest of his life. From 1963 until 1966 Moskowitz lived in Paris. He then returned in 1967 to New York City where he made his permanent home (with intermittent sojourns) until he died there in 2001. Shortly before his death, Zaplin-Lampert Gallery of Santa Fe staged a year 2000-01 exhibition of Ira's works.

Images 24 x 19 inches, one matted. Iris Dawn Parker was an international photographer, artist, curator, scholar, and educator who spent years living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa. She received her BFA in Photography from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and MFAs in Photography from Ohio University and New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Her focuses were photo journalism, documentary photography, and youth mentorship. Her art work and teaching focus was on culture, identity formation, gender, and community. Parker conducted photography and life skills workshops in communities all over South Africa and the United States. She worked in the Cultural Studies Program at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois, and was a visiting scholar at Temple University. She taught at the world renowned Market Theater Foundation, and held artist residencies at the University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, and Rhodes University. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Africa, and she has created exhibitions in South Africa and the US. Among the latter was a Chicago exhibition titled “Mandela: Man of the People”, that featured the photographs of Peter Magubane. She was a Fulbright Memorial Fellow Scholar (Japan), and has exhibited widely in Africa and the US.
