PLURIBUS UNUM” / EAGLE / “T.W.D.” / “KENSINGTON GLASSWORKS PHILADELPHIA”, (GI-14), Kensington Glass Works, Philadelphia, ca. 1825 - 1830, aqua pint, open pontil, sheared and tooled lip. Perfect condition with no wear or scratches, but has some weakness of the impression in the area of the shoulder, a common occurrence for this mould

2. “FELLS” / BUST OF WASHINGTON / “POINT” - MONUMENT / “BALTO”, (GI-20), Baltimore Glass Works, Baltimore, Maryland, ca. 1825 - 1835, light pinkish amethyst pint, open pontil, sheared and tooled lip. Some slight internal haze and just a ‘touch’ or monument wear. An unusually bold impression for this mould even the ‘Fells’ and ‘Balt’ embossing is strong. Construction of the Washington Monument at Fells Point, Baltimore began in 1815 and was completed in 1829.

3. “BRIDGETON NEW JERSEY” / BUST OF WASHINGTON - “BRIDGETON NEW JERSEY” / CLASSICAL BUST, (GI-25), Bridgeton Glass Works, Bridgeton, New Jersey, ca. 1825 - 1835, clear with a faint olive tone (in the base) quart, open pontil, sheared and tooled lip. A 1” vertical stress crack is on the tip of a medial rib. Also, a few spots of minor content stain. Fine impression and full of tiny air bubbles. At first glance it appears to be clear glass, but closer inspection shows a definite olive tone in the base as well as several subtle amethyst striations. An attractive flask and fortunately the mentioned flaw is on the side allowing it to display as in perfect condition. Richard Watson Collection.

4. “LA FAYETTE” / BUST OF LAFAYETTE / “T.S.” - “DE WITT CLINTON” / BUST OF CLINTON / “COVENTRY / C-T”, (GI-80), Coventry Glass Works, Coventry, Connecticut, ca. 1825 - 1835, medium olive-green pint, open pontil, sheared and tooled lip. At first glance it appears to be in perfect condition. But under closer inspection a 3/4” stress radiation can be seen on a corner of the base near a mould seam. Possible in-making flaw aside this is an exceptional example. Great impression it has a number of tiny air bubbles and is in a very rare pure green color that shades from lighter to darker. This is a ‘new find’ from California.

A 1/4” of glass roughness is off the tip of the base at a mould seam. A pinhead in size flake is off the inside edge of the lip

6. “GENERAL LA FAYETTE” / BUST OF LAFAYETT / “REPUBLICAN / GRATITUDE” - “E. PLURIBUS UNUM” - EAGLE, “T.W.D.” - “KENSINGTON GLASS / WORKS PHILADELPHIA”, (GI-90), Kensington Glass Works, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, ca. 1825 - 1835, aqua pint, open pontil, sheared and tooled lip. An in-making 3/8” by 1/4” open bubble is on a base corner, otherwise in pristine perfect condition. This is an exceptional example. It has as bold an impression that we have seen on this mould and shows no trace of wear or scratches. A scarce flask, made to commemorate the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to Philadelphia, September 28, 1824.

7. “JENY LIND” / BUST OF JENNY LIND - GLASS FACTORY, (GI-103), Whitney Glass Works, Glassboro, New Jersey, ca. 1855 - 1865, aqua calabash, open pontil scarred base, applied tapered collar mouth. An open surface bubble with a tiny bruise is on a vertical rib just off the Glass Factory embossing. Mentioned flaw aside this is a nice example and full of trapped air bubbles

8. “LOUIS KOSSUTH” / BUST OF KOSSUTH - FRIGATE / “U.S. STEAM FRIGATE / MISSISSIPPI / S. HUFFSEY”, (GI-112), made for Samuel Huffsey, blown at a South Jersey Glass Works, yellowish citron green calabash, “PH DOFLEIN MOULD MAKER NTH 5T ST 84” on base, open pontil, applied blob mouth. A faint in-making spider crack is located on his chest, otherwise in perfect condition. This flaw is masked by the impression and not easily seen. A scarce color for this mould and with a very bold impression. Richard Watson Collection.

9. “KOSSUTH” / BUST OF KOSSUTH - TREE, (GI-113), American, ca. 1851 - 1855, yellow olive calabash, open pontil, applied double collar mouth. A flat 1/4” chip is on the base, also a few light scratches. Fine example and a scarce color for this mould that normally occurs in aqua. Probably blown at a Philadelphia or Southern New Jersey glass house

11. EAGLE - EAGLE, (GII-24), Louisville Glass Works, Louisville, Kentucky, ca. 1835 - 1845, bluish aqua pint, open pontil, rough sheared and tooled lip. The rough sheared lip has some in-making and post production chipping. None are major but are notable. Also some light shoulder content stain. Always a charming flake and with plenty of embossing!

The blue-green flask has a tiny 1/8” chip off the tip of a mould seam at the base that may have occurred when the flask was removed from the mould. The yellow green example has a 3/4” vertical medial rib crack and some dried contents.

26. MASONIC ARCH - EAGLE, (GIV-14), Keene Glass Works, Keene, New Hampshire, ca. 1815 - 1825, light to medium yellowish green half-pint, pontil scarred base, sheared and tooled lip. About perfect. A tiny spot of glass roughness is on the outer edge of the lip and a ‘touch’ of wear is on the Eagle. Very bold impression, full of tiny bubbles and glass impurities. Rated as rare in the ‘American Glass’ charts and probably more so in this color!

27. EAGLE / “KEENE” (in oval) - MASONIC ARCH, (GIV-17), Keene Glass Works, Keene, New Hampshire, ca. 1820 - 1830, medium olive-green pint, pontil scarred base, tooled lip. A very clean 1/4” chip is off the tip of a medial rib at the base and a ‘touch’ of wear. This is an overall excellent flask with an exceptional impression (even all of the Masonic ornaments surrounding the arch are clearly legible) and in a not often seen pure green color!

28. SUNBURST Flask, (GVIII-2), Keene Glass Works, Keene, New Hampshire, 1815 - 1825, light to medium yellowish apple green pint, pontil scarred base, sheared and tooled lip. About perfect condition (some outer edge of lip wear has a pinhead in size flake). Non-offensive minor flaw aside this is a wonderful example, free of any other issues and in a better than normal color.

A shallow 3/8” horizontal chip is off the inside edge of the lip, otherwise in perfect condition. The anchor indicates that the bottle was the property of the British Royal Navy. During Captain John Cooks’ exposition to the South Pacific, (1768 - 1771) it was discovered that bottles of lime juice carried on the ship would prevent the crew from acquiring scurvy. After the discovery every navel vessel of the British Navy was required to carry it on every voyage.

Early Glass House Related Letter, English, ca. 1823, the letter reads, “To all whom these presents shall come, I Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, do appoint Msyrs Hancock, Shepherd & Riscon of Backsfire Street, Charing Crofs, to be my glass manufacturers. In writing where of I have presented my hand and seal this day of May 1823. Frederick”. The letter is 8 1/2”h, 7 3/4” wide, a faint watermark of a Coat-of-Arms is in the center. An affixed seal, probably of the Duke, is in the lower right corner. With the exception of some light browning of the paper the piece is in overall excellent preserved condition. Talk about being unique!

When the lip on the wide mouth jars was sheared away from the blowpipe a 3/8” chip remained. The applied mouth only covered part of it leaving some of the side of the neck. From this chip an opening travels through the lip. Very unusual, but in the making.

The Snuff jar has “P / LORILLARD / CO” on the base, the potato “PAT. APPLD FOR”, the Snuff jar has the correct “COHANSEY GLASS” etc. embossed glass lid and wire closure, 90% original labels in part read: ‘Maccoboy Snuff, American Snuff Company, P. Lorillard Co, of Jersey City, N.J.’. The pickle jar has original 45% front and 98% rear labels for ‘Finest Nonpariel Pickles, Family Use, New York’. The potato whiskey nip has 95% of its original brown paint and metal screw on cap. All three are in perfect condition.

Pitkin flask, (McK/Wil, plate 59, #7 & 8), Mid-Atlantic States, ca. 1810 - 1825, light yellowish olive green, 16-broken rib pattern swirled to the right, 5 3/4”h, pontil scarred base, sheared and tooled lip, blown in the German half-post method. A very faint 1/4” stress crack is located on a side, also a few light scratches from usage. This is a very unusual, light color for a Pitkin flask that we may have not encountered before. And the mentioned flaw (if you can find it) is non-offensive.

(Lot of 3), Freeblown Seahorse Scent Bottles, (Glass Gaffers of New Jersey, fig. 151), probably new Jersey, ca. 1825 - 1840, clear glass with white looping, clear glass with white and blue looping and a clear glass with white, blue and deep amethyst looping, 2 1/4” to 2 3/4” in size, pontil scarred bases, sheared and tooled lips, all three have a band of cogglewheeled rigaree. The white loop scent is perfect. The white with blue scent is missing a 1” area of the rigaree. The triple color scent is very unusual in that the fully twisted tail was never completed. The cobalt piece has ‘DAF’, ‘JRG’ and ‘GV59’ etched on the base. The amber pitcher is a classic early Clevenger Bothers piece, the cobalt blue example is later. The drinking glass has a 3/16” chip located on the upper flange of the pedestal that meet the glass. The bowl is perfect.

Both have very fine etching. The clear glass bottle has ‘C.E.K. / from a / friend.’ on the front panel. Each side panel has a different scene. One has ‘two deer and a tree’, another has a ‘house with wooden fence and trees’, the third ‘two peacocks and a tree’. Both are in perfect condition.

357. (Lot of 2), Freeblown Fancy Drinking Glasses, possibly Scandinavian, light yellowish citron color, 4 3/4”h, pontil scarred bases, sheared and tooled rims. A 21-broken rib pattern font with vertical rib pattern center stem is attached to a horizontal spun glass base. An applied crimped band is just below the font and four raised ‘Lion’s head’ attachments are on the center area. Both are in perfect condition. Very unusual and extremely well made, but difficult to determine the age.

The blacking bottle has a piece of glass from a foreign object adhered to a side at the base and a faint side panel fissure. The ink has some very faint inside haze.
