Every Auction Tells a Story - The Extraordinary Collection of Skip Handy

Some auctions are about selling antiques. This auction is about celebrating a lifetime of collecting.

When Pat and I first walked through Skip Handy's home, it quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary collection. Everywhere you looked was another conversation piece—another object with history, character, and a story behind it. Skip didn't collect because something was valuable; he collected because he appreciated craftsmanship, beauty, and the stories that each piece carried with it.

Skip had an incredible eye. He could walk through an antique shop, an estate sale, or even a neighborhood garage sale and see something that everyone else had overlooked. He loved bringing forgotten treasures back to life and surrounding himself with objects that reflected history, art, and exceptional design. His home wasn't decorated—it was curated over a lifetime.

As you browse this auction, you'll quickly realize there isn't just one theme. That's what makes it so much fun. One lot may feature an impressive bear mount, while the next includes candlesticks believed to date to the late 1700s and to have originated from one of Boston's historic cathedrals. You'll discover an outstanding collection of Orient & Flume art glass paperweights, beautiful early stained-glass windows, original artwork, quality furnishings, and an extraordinary silver service engraved for the infamous Judge Hanna of Boston, a well-known criminal lawyer of the late nineteenth century. Every room, every shelf, and every display offered another remarkable discovery.

But perhaps the most interesting part of this auction isn't the antiques themselves—it's the man who collected them.

Skip lived a fascinating life, serving as an educator, businessman, administrator, and community leader. Those who knew him remember his generosity, his warm smile, and his unmistakable sense of style. He loved decorating homes, admired classic automobiles, and had a special place in his heart for animals. His dogs were part of the family, and in true Skip fashion, he even had a pet skunk named Flower. Somehow, that story seems to fit perfectly with a man whose life was anything but ordinary.

At The Steffen Group, we often say that Every Auction Tells a Story. I can't think of a collection that better represents that idea than this one. Every item in this auction has a history. Some belonged to remarkable people. Some came from remarkable places. Others simply caught the eye of a man who knew quality when he saw it.

Now it's time for those stories to continue.

We are honored that Skip's family entrusted The Steffen Group with presenting this extraordinary collection, and we invite you to take your time, explore every lot, and perhaps discover a piece whose story becomes part of your own.
