He grew up to become captain of a ship (name unknown), married a New England woman (Rice) and had three children - daughter Henrietta, later Mrs. Louis Lutz, Dedham - George Fred, Boston lawyer, Ambassador to Greece under Wilson and while there offered crown of Albania. A brother had an early demise. Like a good captain, he went down with his ship when after returning from a trip to China a bad storm arose in Boston Harbor and the ship was destroyed.".

Both with a handwritten payee of "Geo [?]andy" and the forged signatures of the bank directors. Stamped with the seal of the bank, which would have been carved from stockyard bones. Housed together in a common frame.

Balch's storied career in the U.S. Navy included service in the Civil War and Mexican-American War, and executive officer of the sloop-of-war Plymouth, which sailed to Asia in 1851 and was part of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to open Japan in 1853. Interior of case lid with Richard Patten & Son paper label. Patten was one of the few 19th Century firms producing these instruments in America and had a contract with the U.S. government.

SAILOR-MADE PATRIOTIC INLAID DRESSER BOX Third Quarter of the 19th Century Lid with American flags, an arch of stars, a rising sun and flower-filled urns on plinths surrounding a shield emblazoned with three birds and topped with a fourth bird. Front with "CRA", floral medallions and three arrows piercing the mother-of-pearl shield-shaped escutcheon. One side with a star flanked by altars. Other side with an American-flagged steamboat between two hillside villages populated with houses, a church, a lighthouse, a fort-like building and trees. Rear with a seascape showing houses and a lighthouse on a hill, an American-flagged ship and a large bird. Barber's pole and geometric borders. Most of the inlay in figured woods except a wing on each of the birds on the lid and two of the arrows on the front are metal and one of the arrows is bone. LOG OF THE FAMOUS AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIP "FLYING CLOUD" 19th Century Kept daily by Captain Winsor, outlining the seventh voyage of the Flying Cloud from December 9, 1859 through January 5, 1862. Her track was from New York to London, to Hong Kong, to London, to Melbourne, to Hong Kong, and to London, where she was sold upon arrival to British interests. An informative and interesting log. Notable remarks include the sighting of the Robin Hood and the good deal of money bet on which of the two ships would reach Hong Kong first. Winsor writes on May 21, after his arrival in Hong Kong, that Flying Cloud "beat the Robin Hood seven days on the passage. The smartest English ship in the China trade". He also notes that at least one bet of 400 English pounds was placed on the Robin Hood and several of lesser amounts. On August 7, 1860 Flying Cloud ran into a typhoon after leaving Hong Kong. The ship was on a lee shore, and "it blew the most violent continuous thirty-six hours. I have been going to sea for thirty-five years and never saw such a gale as this before. It has made the Flying Cloud look a wreck. Still, no ship could behave better. Made very little water, lost no spars, but any quantity of sails". Approx. 46 printed double pages. Kept in a large oblong folio volume in wraps printed by M.F. Maury of the United States Hydrographical Office. Contained in a modern folding box with gilt calf spine.

The medallion at center bears a striking resemblance to the Springfield Armory emblem and the piece was discovered in western Massachusetts, possibly indicating it is architectural salvage from the Springfield Armory factory.
