The upper and lower sections with banded collars. The stone is an even, fine grained white jade with a soft waxy luster characteristic of Hetian nephrite. Fitted with a black cord and agate bead for suspension. Dimension: 3 5/8 in. (9.4 cm). Condition: Excellent, minor age related surface wear. no cracks or repairs. Second is a spinach green jade "Gourds and Butterflies" Ruyi head Plaque, of rounded rectangular form, carved in low relief with two large gourds on leafy vine, accompanied by butterfly. The revised side is plain and slightly dished. The stone is a deep spinach green nephrite with characteristic black speckle. Dimension: 3 1/2 in. width (9 cm). Condition: internal stone hairline, minor edge chips to reverse, surface wear consistent with age. no repairs.

Two Chinese Carved White Jade Ruyi Plaques Qing Dynasty. Comprising two finely carved white jade plaques of Ruyi scepters. The larger plaque: Of elongated ruyi-head outline, worked in low relief with endless knot, Buddhist umbrella symbol and a large lotus bloom and leafy tendrils motif. The reverse is plain. The stone is a pale celadon white jade with natural russet inclusion to one side. The smaller plaque: A pale celadon jade "Flaming Pearl" plaque, of irregular quatrefoil form, carved in low relief with a central eight petaled floral medallion representing a cintamani or wish fulfilling jewel. The jewel in encircled by radiating flames, a Buddhist motif known as Huoyan baozhu, symbolized as scrolling Ruyi clouds, merging Buddhist and Daoist iconography. The reverse is plain. The stone is of an even, pale white tone. Both stones exhibit a soft, waxy luster characteristic of fine Hetian nephrite. Dimensions: Larger: 4 1/4 inches (11 cm long). Smaller: 3 inches, (7.5 cm) wide. Condition: Excellent condition. Minor surface abrasions and russet inclusions consistent with age. minor edge chips on the back sides, no repairs.

The cabinet is fitted with engraved bronze brass hardware and mounted with three hand painted Satsuma porcelain plaques depicting bijin beauties in interior and outdoor scenes, rendered in gilt and polychrome enamels. The upper section features black lacquer panels with gold decoration of birds and autumn grasses. Height: approx. 27 in. (68.5 cm), Width: approx. 24 1/2 in (62 cm). Depth: approx. 11 in. (24.5 cm). Lot: 165 - A Japanese Gilt and Lacquered Wood Zushi Shrine

A Japanese Gilt and Lacquered Wood Zushi Shrine Meiji Period. The tall rectangular shrine of architectural form, the exterior finished in black lacquer with extensive gilt decoration and wear. The double doors of the shrine embellished with elaborate pierced and chased copper-gilt kanagu mounts of scrolling peony and karakusa vines, opening to reveal a gilt interior chamber with original textile lining. The roof in the irimoya style with gracefully upswept eaves, surmounted by a lobed wooden finial and centered to the front with a circular mon crest depicting a mitsudomoe motif against a black ground. The shrine supported on a waisted, tiered base carved with lotus petals, key-fret, and scrolling foliage, all above a stepped plinth with cut corners. Dimensions: Height 34.5 cm (13 1/4 in.) Condition: Wear and losses to the black lacquer and gilding overall, consistent with age and handling. Minor chips and abrasions to wood at the roof corners and base. Surface scratches to lacquer on reverse. The original Buddhist figure absent. The doors retain their original hinges and latch. A beautiful, undisturbed patina. Note: A zushi is a miniature shrine or cabinet used to house a sacred image for private devotion. This example, with its lavish use of gilt and prominent mitsudomoe crest, indicates it was likely commissioned for a wealthy merchant household or a minor temple during the Meiji period, a time of great artistic patronage.

The rounded square tsuba with gilt rim, decorated in nunome zogan with turbulent waves and a rocky outcrop highlighted in gold. Second is a signed iron Maru-Gata tsuba with open work bamboo. The circular tsuba pierced and carved in sukashi with bamboo stalks and leaves, the surface with scattered gold nunome zogan inlay. Signed Masayoshi with kao. 2.75 in. (7 cm) wide. Third is a signed iron Maru-Gata tsuba with figure and landscape. The circular tsuba with textured ground, inlaid in gold and silver with a standing figure beneath an architectural structure, beside a flowing stream. 2.8 in. (7.1 cm) wide. Fourth is a large iron Nagamaru-Gata tsuba with scholars in a landscape. The oval tsuba carved and inlaid in gold with a continuous scene of figures in a mountainous landscape with pavilions and pine trees. Signed with a two-character signature. Comprising: First is a nephrite jade reticulated two part purse shaped sachet, Hobao Xiangnang, of flattened form with lobed sides and a flared, pleated neck imitating a fabric drawstring pouch. Both faces deeply reticulated with dense scrolling lotus blossoms, the openwork exceptionally crisp. Pierced for suspension at the top and bottom, now strung with a modern orange silk cord, lapis lazuli bead, and crystal toggle. The stone of an even icy-white tone with natural cloud-like inclusions, polished to a soft waxy luster. Dimensions: 2 1/4 in.(6 cm ) wide. Condition: Excellent. Second is serpentine reticulated plaque of rectangular form, carved with a phoenix amidst peony blossoms and scrolling foliage, the border with serrated edges. Width: 2 in. (5.5 cm). Fitted with a green hard stone stopper. The bottle is constructed over a carved wood core, visible through an area of loss to the lower body. Condition: Loss to the inlaid decoration on one lower side panel exposing the wood core, with minor wear consistent with age. Height: 3 inches (7.6 cm).

Inside-Painted Crystal Glass Snuff Bottle ‘Qingming Shanghe Tu',Signed Li Kechang, Dated 1964 The bottle of flattened rectangular form, masterfully hollowed from clear crystal glass. The interior brilliantly painted in ink and subtle polychrome with a continuous, highly detailed miniature version of the famous Song dynasty scroll painting ‘Along the River During the Qingming Festival' Qingming Shanghe Tu. One side depicts the bustling scene with crowds, boats, and shops, the reverse shows a tranquil riverside landscape with pavilion and scholar. Inscribed in fine regular script: Qingming Shanghe Tu, Jiachen chun yue Li Kechang zhi yu Qi Lu zhi long, and with a seal Ke Chang. Complete with a dark pink stopper. Height: approx. 3.5 in. (8.9 cm) Condition: One small chip to the mouth rim, the crystal glass is clear and free from scratches. The interior painting is vibrant and extraordinarily detailed with no fading. The stopper is original. Note: This snuff bottle is a tour-de-force of the ‘Li School' of inside-painting, and a masterpiece by Li Kechang (1918-1998), one of the four great 20th-century masters of the art form. Dated to the Spring of the Jiachen year, which refers to the year of 1964, it was created in Shandong Qi Lu. To paint the immensely complex ‘Qingming Shanghe Tu' inside a bottle only 3 inches tall requires superhuman control, patience, and artistry. Li Kechang was renowned for his fine-line figure painting and his ability to render hundreds of figures with individual expressions. This is a museum-quality example from his peak period.

Sino-Tibetan Bronze Alloy Figure of Chakrasamvara Powerfully cast in bronze with dark patina and traces of gilding, depicting the Tantric deity Chakrasamvara in union with his consort Vajravarahi (yab-yum). The six-armed deity stands in alidhasana upon a lotus base, trampling two figures beneath his feet. His principal hands hold a vajra and ghanta while embracing his consort, and his remaining hands brandish various ritual implements including a damaru, khatvanga, skull, and a flaying knife. He is adorned with a crown of skulls, bone ornaments, and a tiger-skin dhoti. The consort, Vajravarahi, wraps her one leg around his waist, one leg stands and gazes into his eyes. The figure is supported on a lotus pedestal. Height: approx. 6 in. (15 cm); Width: 4 in. (10 cm).

Three Japanese Lacquer Inros with Netsuke and Ojime Edo to Meiji Period. Three lacquer inro with associated netsuke and ojime, including: First a three case red lacquer inro with crane and eagle design of rounded rectangular form, decorated in takamaki-e with a river landscape in tones of gold and brown cranes and eagles on a shu-urushi ground. With a glazed pottery netsuke of a crabs and a white agate ojime. 2.5 in. high. Second is a four case gold lacquer inro with geometric design. Of rounded rectangular form, decorated in hiramaki-e and kirigane with bands of formal patterns including shippo, kikko, and floral motifs on a nashiji ground, the interiors nashiji. With a carved red lacquer manju netsuke and seed ojime. Condition: good, with minor rubbing to high points. The netsuke and ojime with general wear consistent with age. Third is three case red lacquer inro with tiger and bamboo. Of rounded rectangular form, decorated in gold and black takamaki-e with a snarling tiger descending from bamboo, with details in mother-of-pearl inlay. With a wood double-gourd netsuke and green cord. 2.9 in. (7.4 cm) high. Showing age cracks to the lacquer consistent with use. Provenance: Bonhams New York, Sale 24721, "Arts of the Samurai", October 30, 2017. Note: Inro were worn suspended from the obi by Japanese men during the Edo period and served as portable containers for seals and medicine. The associated netsuke functioned as toggles, while the sliding ojime beads secured the cords. This group demonstrates the range of lacquer techniques from the functional wares of the Edo period to the highly decorative export styles of the Meiji era.

Second is an iron Tsuba inlaid in gold with a fisherman in a boat beneath geese and reeds, the reverse side depicts reeds, rocks and waves. diameter: 2 3/4 in. (7.5 cm). Third is a bronze menuki of a diving Hawk. Cast as a hawk with gilt eye and beak, finely detailed feathers, menuki were mounted under the sword grip. 3 7/8 in. (10. 5 cm). Fourth is a Shakudo Yuchi with phoenix, decorated in relief with a gold and silver phoenix above ocean waves. diameter: 2 1/4 in. (6.5 cm). Condition: all in good condition commensurate with age and use. with rich patina and light verdigris.

Japanese Mixed Metal Theater Scene Plaque Meiji Period. The rectangular plaque cast and inlaid in gold, silver, copper and shakudo with a lively theatrical scene. The upper register depicts an actor in elaborate costume performing on a balcony beneath a tiled roof with hanging lanterns. The lower register shows four figures in animated poses before a draped curtain, possibly a street performance or festival scene. The reverse cast in low relief with a landscape of pine trees and rocky outcrops. 10 1/4 in. (26.5 cm) long Note: This plaque exemplifies the technical virtuosity of Meiji period metalwork, when Japanese artisans combined multiple alloys and patination techniques to create painterly, three-dimensional scenes. Such plaques were made for the Western export market and were often mounted as decorative panels or used as desk ornaments. The theatrical subject matter, known as shibai, was a popular theme reflecting the cultural life of Edo-period Japan.

The globular teapot is finely enameled in the famille rose palette with two birds perched on flowering branches of peony and chrysanthemum, all within scrolling green foliate borders. The shoulder with a band of floral sprays, the neck with yellow leiwen border. The base bears a four character iron red seal mark Ju Ren Tang zhi within a square. Four Porcelain snuff bottles First is a blue glazed molded dragon snuff bottle of flattened ovoid body reticulated carved with five clawed dragon writhing amongst cloud scrolls above crashing waves, locking stopper. Second is a turquoise ground Shiwan kilns snuff bottle, carved in high relief with nine Buddhist lions playing with brocade balls. Condition: chip to rim, losses in gilt, locking stopper. Third is a blue and white pomegranate form porcelain snuff bottle, exterior painted in underglaze cobalt blue with blossoming prunus branches, locking stopper. Fourth is blue glazed fish form snuff bottle. Height of the tallest: 3 1/2 in. (9.5 cm).

Lot: 275 - Three Chinese Jade Carvings.

Three Chinese Jade Carvings. Qing Dynasty and later First is a pale celadon jade reticulated 'dragon and cash' plaque, carved in openwork with a central design of interlocking ancient coins surrounded by scrolling chilong dragons, the stone with areas of black speckling. 4 in. (10 cm) wide Second is a white and russet jade 'chilong' belt hook, the arched shaft surmounted by a large dragon head, a smaller chilong clambering up the shaft, the stone with russet inclusions. 5 in. (13 cm) long. Third is a gilt bronze mounted white jadeite two part belt buckle, each oval jade plaque of rectangular form with rounded corners, set within a gilt-bronze frame cast with taotie masks. 5 in. (12.7 cm) long overall Note: The three pieces represent the quintessential accessories of a Qing dynasty scholar official or nobleman. The 'dragon and cash' plaque symbolizes wealth and status, the chilong belt hook was worn to suspend items from the belt, and the jade-inlaid buckle reflects the highest level of craftsmanship in personal adornment.

The rim with gilt border and iron red squash and floral decoration. Diameter: 9.5 in. (24.1 cm). Condition: minor loss of enamel and gilt, minor kiln grit and firing imperfections to base.

Three Snuff Bottles First is an ovoid form famille rose enamel porcelain river landscape, inscribed on the shoulder with two red seal marks, the base with red "Jing Yuan Tang Zhi" mark, gilt rim. Height: 2.5 inches (7 cm). Lacking stopper. Second is a flatten apple form lavender jade with pale green hard stone stopper. Height: 2 5/8 inches (7.4 cm). Third is a carved Jasper stone fish form snuff bottle, with high relief and lively expression, with matching stone stopper. Height: 3 inches (8 cm).

Chinese Honey Agate Snuff Bottle 19th Century. The flattened ovoid body of translucent honey brown agate with natural dark striations and inclusions, skillfully carved in low relief to one side with an immortal aside a mythical beast on top of the mountain, the reverse is uncarved. The stone of rich, warm tone with good translucency. Height: 2 3/4 inches ( 7.5 cm). Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. Natural inclusions inherent to the stone, some cleverly incorporated into the carving. One minor shallow chip to foot rim, approx. 2mm. Associated stopper without spoon. No repairs.

Of flattened rounded form with cylindrical neck, the pale celadon jade stone of even tone and soft waxy luster, both sides delicately incised and carved with orchid leaves and flowers, the design simple and elegant, well hollowed. Coral stopper surmounted by a pearl finial. Height: 2 1/2 inches (7 cm). Condition: Good. The stone with light surface surface wear consistent with age. A faint natural fissure visible on one side, stable and not running through. Stopper and spoon appear original, no repairs.

The stone of varied apple green and moss green tones with icy white areas, showing good translucency. Rising from a chrysanthemum petal carved foot to a short cylindrical neck. Well hollowed. Fitted with a domed lapis lazuli stopper and cork collar. Height: 7.6 cm, 3 in including stopper Condition: Good overall condition. The stone with natural fissures and dark mineral inclusions inherent to the material, all stable. Light surface wear consistent with age. No cracks or repairs. Original high polish intact. Of flattened rectangular form, carved through a red overlay to the opaque white ground with lotus flowers, leaves and two butterflies. The sides with incised key fret border. Base bears a red seal mark. Short cylindrical neck and flat oval foot. Fitted with a pale yellow glass bead stopper and bone spoon. Height: 7 cm, 2 3/4 in Second is a five color overlay glass 'Dragon'. Of compressed globular form, carved through layers of yellow, blue, green, red and black overlay to the white ground with five stylized dragons amid clouds. The ground with a frosted snow storm effect. Short cylindrical neck and concave foot. Fitted with a pale celadon jadeite or glass stopper and horn spoon. Height: 5.1 cm, 2 in. Condition: The red overlay bottle with minor surface wear and light staining to interior. Small chip to mouth rim, approx. 2mm. Spoon stained from use. The five-color bottle with minor roughness to high points of carving and light wear. Both well hollowed. No restoration. Stoppers appear associated.

(10.8 cm) long Provenance: Former Phil Cardeiro Collection, Pebble Beach, Northern California Note: Chrysanthemum, one of the 'Four Gentlemen' in Chinese culture, symbolizes longevity, nobility, and endurance. Jade plaques such as this were scholar's objects, held in the hand for contemplation or used as paperweights. The tactile pleasure of the stone was as important as its visual beauty.
