The verso of this work is inscribed in pencil: "Sketched for Dennis by Dr. Suess at the request of J. L. Hudson Jr. about 1964 at a display and promotion for his books downtown". Lot: 1059 - George Chann AKA Chen Yinpi (Chinese American, 1913-1995) Abstract Expressionist Oil on Masonite, Ca. 1968, 'Untitled', H 15.5" W 17.5"

Signed lower right. Ankrum Gallery, LA label verso. Inventory #GC18. According to Ankrum Gallery records that correspond to this inventory number, this work was originally titled "Chang handed me this tracing". It was accompanied with a poem: "Chang handed me this tracing/ I who am fond of antiquity/ Those old relics/ Mine is a happy life/ I looked up at a pinnacle/ The fine clouds have opened/ For behind me is my own country/ There are rocks and fisherman on boat/ The moon grows full now over them".  Born in Guangdong Province, China, Chann emigrated to the US in 1922. After completing his formal art education and several solo exhibitions, Chann fled China as the revolution progressed and eventually returned to Los Angeles where his work explored abstraction with calligraphic influences. Chann is known to have written Chinese calligraphy poems daily and it is not often that one of his poems can be directly traced to one of his paintings or watercolors.  Provenance: Ankrum Gallery, Los Angeles verso with inventory label GC18Property of a Zionsville, IN private collector.
