American School, 19th century, painting of Hammond Hospital, Annapolis, Maryland. Oil on board. Period frame, probably original frame. Depicting a waterscape with forked pier terminating in two red-roofed institutional buildings, the large central building with flag inscribed "Hammond Hospital," and leading to an additional pier with outbuilding. Hammond Hospital was located on the tip of point Lookout, at the confluence of Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. At the onset of the Civil War, the Federal government erected the hospital and, after the Battle of Gettysburg, teh facility was converted to a prison under the name Camp Hoffman. Over 52,000 Confederate soldiers were incarcerated there, over 4,000 of whom died. The remains of the structure are now largely under water. American School, 19th century, painting of Hammond Hospital, Annapolis, Maryland. Oil on board. Period frame, probably original frame. Depicting a waterscape with forked pier terminating in two red-roofed institutional buildings, the large central building with flag inscribed "Hammond Hospital," and leading to an additional pier with outbuilding. Hammond Hospital was located on the tip of point Lookout, at the confluence of Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. At the onset of the Civil War, the Federal government erected the hospital and, after the Battle of Gettysburg, teh facility was converted to a prison under the name Camp Hoffman. Over 52,000 Confederate soldiers were incarcerated there, over 4,000 of whom died. The remains of the structure are now largely under water.
