Produced by ABNC: A gorgeous uniface pairing of an unadopted design for 10 Yuan, 1944. Unique. The obverse is orange with a light yellow-green underprint, Sun Yat Sen at centre. The reverse is predominantly orange-brown, with the Forbidden City at the centre. Both sides feature a mix of collage and hand-painted elements, resulting in a fine, exquisite design. The cataloguer observes that the last notes printed by ABNC for the Central Bank were around 1928, and these models could be a strong attempt to win back the printing contracts for the company. Unfortunately, the Central Bank never engaged the ABNC again, and the printing was awarded to Security Banknotes Company, Waterlow and Sons, De La Rue and a handful of local Chinese printers.

Lot: 30087 - CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 5 Dollars, 3.9.1919. P-S352A. S/M#Y13-31. PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
Shanghai. Issued 5 Dollars from the second 'Allegorical' series and the first date with the allegorical scene depicting agriculture in maroon on the back. All original colors are present, and amazingly, the paper is completely original despite the obvious circulation signs. Although the note falls in the median range in terms of grade when compared to its peers, it is only one of five notes out of the present total population of 53 that has earned the EPQ qualifier (3x 30-EPQ and 2x 58-EPQ). This is a note that will certainly be of interest to the discerning collector who appreciates totally original notes.

Tientsin overprinted on an issued Tsingtau note. Fourth and final series. Serial number 025079. A very rare specimen of a brightly coloured 100 Dollars, with the new branch name and date in red. It is unclear why this overprinting occurred, as the date is a few months before the Marco Polo Bridge Incident that marked the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. One of just seven notes graded by PMG at the time of cataloguing. PMG Comments "Pinholes, Minor Rust."
Lot: 30091 - (t) CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Banque Sino-Francais. 10 Dollars, 1919. P-Unlisted. Printer's Model. PMG Uncirculated 62.
Uniface obverse printer's model of an unissued design for the Banque Sino-Francais. Brown on olive, the Marble Boat at Summer Palace at the center, denomination at each corner, red seal signatures. A collage of hand-drawn and printed elements and an insightful look into the design process. Annotations suggest that this was produced in China. It has very fine workmanship, a beautiful design, and is unique to the best of our knowledge. The Banque Sino-Francais was one of several European-founded banks that sought to participate in the expanding economy of 20th-century China. The full name of this institution was Banque Franco-Chinoise pour le Commerce et l'Industrie, reflecting on the eventual business interests it sought. Founded in Paris in 1922, it was initially formed to manage the interests of the Banque Industrielle de Chine, which had been placed under bankruptcy protection the previous year. The bank was not only active in China, but also in French Indo-China and the French West Indies. Unlike the Banque Industrielle, which had an extensive note issuance, no notes of this bank are believed to have ever been made. The present piece proved that note issuance was considered, but for whatever reason it was decided not to follow through. A highly important offering for the Chinese specialist. PMG Comments "Printer's Stamp, Stained."

Lot: 30096 - (t) CHINA--PROVINCIAL BANKS. Sikang Provincial Bank. 1 Yuan, 1939. P-S1740. S/M#H75-10. PMG About Uncirculated 53.
Lovely, bright colours adorn both sides of the note, with minor handling and slight off print on the obverse to prevent a higher numerical grade. Sikang Province was established in 1939 and was among the poorest regions of China. The Bank, founded in 1937, began issuing notes denominated in 'Tibetan Currency' to replace local Tibetan coins with the national Fa Bi. These notes were recalled from 1946, and the Bank and its operations were fully replaced by the Central Bank of China in 1948. Given the poor regional economy, the fairly long circulation life, and the almost complete redemption of these notes, relatively few survive into modern times, and high grade notes are almost unheard of. This example is in THIRD HIGHEST GRADE, with one note in PMG 58 and another in PMG 62 (which we sold in April 2026) higher. PMG Comments "Closed Pinhole."
Lot: 30097 - (t) CHINA--PROVINCIAL BANKS. Lot of (2). Sinkiang Commercial & Industrial Bank. 10 Yuan & 200,000 Yuan, 1940-48. P-S1758c & S1777. Very Fine to PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.

One of the most well-recognized and beautiful designs of Chinese paper money is the large-format Hupeh Government Mint 1 Dollar note. This splendid example features strong green and black inks on the obverse, which enhance the detailed dragon engravings. The reverse shows a vibrant orange border enclosing black Chinese text. A note in solid and original Very Fine (VF) condition, with no detractions whatsoever. This impressive and choice note is highly representative of late Qing era designs and would be a valuable addition to any collection of Chinese banknotes. PMG Comments: "Minor Splits, Annotations"

Shanghai. An extremely rare colour trial in jet black on the obverse and brown on the reverse, with exactly the same design as the true colour specimen in the adjacent lot. The central vignette of coal mine workers highlights the importance that the newly founded People's Republic placed on industrial workers. Although not exactly a rare type, it is still fairly elusive and indeed well sought after in the UNC-EPQ grades.

These early 1920's Kiangsu notes are always popular with collectors as the larger formats and appealing colour are enjoyable, especially with the EPQ status.

Pair of popular Sinkiang notes.
Lot: 30098 - (t) CHINA--PROVINCIAL BANKS. Hupeh Government Mint. 1 Dollar = 7 Mace 2 Candareens, 1899. P-S2135. S/M#H175-20. PMG Very Fine 30.
Lot: 30099 - (t) CHINA--PROVINCIAL BANKS. Lot of (2). Frontier Bank. 10 Yuan, 1921. P-S2553as1 & S2553as2. Uniface Obverse & Reverse Specimen Pair. PMG About Uncirculated 55.
