MARCEL GROMAIRE FRENCH, 1892-1973 VERS UN MONDE VOLAGE (TOWARD AN UNCERTAIN WORLD) PLATES I, 3 and 7 , 1926 Etching Published in Paris in 1926, Editions P. Marcel Sheur (3) Catalogue note: Marcel Gromaire was a French post-Cubist painter, watercolorist, and printmaker associated with the Social Realist movement of the early 20th century. After the war, he moved to Paris intending to study law but soon turned to art, studying at the Académie Ranson, Académie Colarossi, and Académie de la Palette, while developing his own style through independent study of modern art. Gromaire exhibited widely at the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Indépendants and held numerous solo shows, including retrospectives at the Kunstmuseum Basel (1933), Maison de la Peinture (1957), and Musée de l'Art Moderne in Paris (1963, 1980). Gromaire spent time in the United States, won the Carnegie Prize (1952) and Guggenheim Prize (1956), and was later made a Commander of the Légion d'honneur and awarded the Grand Prix National des Arts. CHARLES EMILE JACQUE FRENCH, 1813-1894 PECHE AU VIF Etching Lower left signed: CH. JACQUE; lower center titled and numbered: PECHE AU VIF / No. 82; lower right inscribed: Sarazin IMP Catalog note: The important Barbizon School artist, Charles-Émile Jacque, first became famous for his etchings, with which he made his exhibition debut at the Paris Salon of 1845. He continued to exhibit etchings alone at the Paris Salon until 1848, when for the first time he also exhibited a painting. His etchings won many medals at these exhibitions and in the important Exposition Universelle of 1899, his etchings were awarded the Grand Prize. He became known as a great painter, but according to Bénézit, it is for his etchings that he should be known as one of the great masters of French art. It is possible to distinguish two separate phases of his career as an etcher. During the first, which lasted until 1860, his etchings are marked by grace and charm, but after that date, perhaps under the influence of Millet, his manner became stronger, more vigorous, and more realistic. His later etchings, such as this one, are considered his most interesting and successful ones. Catalog note: Charles-Émile Jacque, an important Barbizon School artist, first gained fame for his etchings, making his debut at the Paris Salon of 1845. He exhibited etchings exclusively until 1848, when he began showing paintings as well. His etchings won many medals, including the Grand Prize at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, and Bénézit notes that it is for his etchings that he should be remembered as one of the great masters of French art. His career as an etcher is marked by two phases: works before 1860 are known for their grace and charm, while his later prints, influenced perhaps by Millet, are stronger, more vigorous, and realistic. His later etchings, such as this example, are considered among his most successful.
