1 - Antique Fireman’s Association Insurance Plaque A very unique selection of an antique Fireman’s Association insurance plaque, perfect for any collector of interesting artifacts and rustic items. Historically also known as a “Fire Mark”, this metal sign was issued by insurance companies to be affixed to the front of a policyholder’s home or business. These plaques served as visible proof insurance but also doubled as early advertising for the company that issued them. Signaling to volunteer fire brigades that the property was insured, in some instances a cash reward would be paid out by the insurance company to the first fire brigade that arrived to put out the fire at that location. The practice of selling, distributing, and hanging of fire marks began originally in London after the Great Fire of 1666. Then in the United States, the first fire marks were issued by Benjamin Franklin’s “Philadelphia Contributionship” of 1752. This would eventually lead to the “Fire Association of Philadelphia” being founded in 1817. As the “Fire Association of Philadelphia” was founded in 1817, it was originally comprised of 11 volunteer engine companies and 5 volunteer hose companies. As a result, it was the first insurance company in America organized and managed by actual volunteer firemen rather than property owners. All profits from the insurance business were distributed back to the volunteer fire companies to fund their equipment and operations. This fire mark showcases the raised image of an early fire hydrant with a “snake-like” hose attached. Set within a vertical oval shape, the prominent letters of “F.A.” are displayed in white. This item is made out of a heavy cast iron, the standard material for the plaques in the early years of the company. As a result, it is assumed that this item is between 160 to 200 years of age. Item uniquely shows its age, giving off a great rustic presentation. 4 - Buescher S-40 Tenor Saxophone Unique selection of a vintage saxophone, perfect for any collect. Produced by Buescher, this is a listed S-40 tenor saxophone, part of the “Aristocrat Series III” era of the company. The instrument has a listed serial number of 365169, showcasing that it was produced in 1961. The S-40 itself was designed as a high-quality student to intermediate instrument, finding a perfect fit for maintaining easy playability within its simplified mechanical design but holds similar tone to professional level instruments. The saxophone is primarily constructed from yellow brass with its keys being nickel-plated for added durability and a silver-colored finish. Instrument itself measures approx. 32” in length and 6” wide at the flared opening at the end of the instrument where the sound projects. Buescher was a cornerstone of American instrument manufacturing, founded by Ferdinand Augustus “Gus” Buescher in 1894 in Elkhart, Indiana. Gus himself was a former foreman at C.G. Conn (another infamous instrument producer)who played a pivotal role in creating the first American-built saxophones. This direct saxophone was produced at the tail end of their “Golden Era”. Saxophone holds some resembled wear due to the element of time, probably holding an estimated grade of good to fine. This includes some elements of discoloration and oxidation. Appears to be a strong candidate for potential restoration. Saxophone also appears to come complete with mouthpiece, reed, and strap. The entire lot is secured with a sturdy black case with fabric interior. Case holds some slight wear due to age but presents nicely in rustic fashion. Case measures 12” H x 32” W x 8” D. 7 - Gun Ruger M77 Mark II Bolt Action Rifle .30-06 From the beginning, the Ruger M77 was intended as a modernized Mauser 98. The major improvements to the M77 that were made to create the M77 Mark II were to the safety, trigger, and bolt. The original two-tang safety has been replaced by a three-position mechanism which allows the chamber to be loaded and unloaded while the bolt can move (as well as locking it in position to prevent it moving all together). This example is seated in a beautiful wooden stock with a near flawless deep bluing that almost gives the appearance of black chrome. This rifle has been meticulously maintained. 8 - Vintage H. Gerstner & Sons Journeyman Chest Great selection of an H. Gerstner & Sons chest, perfect for any vintage collector. This direct representation is that of “Model 052” or the “Journeyman Chest”. The Journeyman Chest model is a vintage 11-drawer machinist tool chest. The model was produced from 1936 up till the 1970s, directly handcrafted from quarter-sawn oak and lined with green felt interior. H. Gerstner & Sons is a legendary American Manufacturer based in Dayton, Ohio. They are uniquely known for producing what are called the “Cadillac” of wooden tool chests. The company was founded in 1906 by Harry Gerstner and has remained family-owned for five generations. It is the last remaining American maker of the original wooden machinist chests. This direct piece holds great rustic quality. Chest is complete except for one central drawer, making a total of 10 drawers featured. The quality of the wood and hardware still holds good representation. Some elements of the green felt holds wear. This piece easily has a prior history as the name “R. Schulthess” has been stamped on the chest. Also, a small selection of tools or drill pits are situated in the top drawer. Chest measures approx. 16” H x 26” W x 9.5” D. Damascus Steel has its origins all the way back to the 6th century AD Celts in the form of Pattern Welding. The Term “Damascus Steel” came from the improvements the Syrians made in the steel compounds used around 750-945 AD. This Steel blade has a unique pattern that is not only attractive but allows the blade to have the best properties of at least two different types of steel. 31 - Art “The Boar & The Ass” by Wenceslaus Hollar Unique selection of a vintage piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “The Boar and The Ass” and was produced by Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677). The work was originally produced as an illustration for John Ogilby’s English translation of “The Fables of Aesop”. In the fable, the foolish ass (or donkey) begins to insult the boar but boar ultimately realizes that it is beneath him to match the other creature in the game of insults. It is ultimately an Aesop’s Fable on the dignity of restraint. Wenceslaus Hollar was a prolific Bohemian engraver and etcher who became one of the most significant artists of the 17th century. He produced over 2,700 detailed etchings that documented the world around him. On of his most prominent pieces was capturing a visual record of the “before” and “after” of London because of the “Great Fire of 1666”. 37 - Gun Flaigs FN Mauser Bolt Action Rifle 7mm Rem Mag “Flaig’s” was a Pennsylvanian gunsmithing company specializing in fine custom hunting rifles based off imported FN Mauser actions. This example is chambered in 7mm Rem Mag and sports a 24” barrel. This rifle is fitted with a Hogue inc overmolded stock and appears to be in good working order. 46a - Gun Bushmaster Carbon 15 Semi Auto Rifle 5.56mm The Carbon 15 is a family of lightweight AR-15-style pistols, carbines, and rifles developed by defunct United States weapons manufacturer Professional Ordnance, with the design later picked up by Bushmaster Firearms. The Carbon 15 line is closely based on the Colt AR-15 design. Carbon 15 rifles have carbon fiber upper and lower receivers, which are lighter than the standard aluminum and steel construction of AR-15 receivers. Both pictures showcase campus landscapes from Ohio State University (OSU), printed in ink line drawing and then hand-painted in watercolor design. These works were done by artist Foster Gray who went by the pseudonym of “Paul Andrews” for his “Paul Andrews Campus Series”. The Paul Andrews Campus Series were produced between 1967 and 1975 in which artist Foster Gray provided campus art for alumni. A large assortment of prevalent colleges commissioned their landscapes to be painted and as each one was hand done, no two works are the same even if the same landscape is depicted. Red Wing Union Stoneware crocks were produced in Red Wing, Minnesota and used as practical utility containers for food preservation such as making sauerkraut and pickles. Crocks with the prominent “Red Wing Union Stoneware Co.” stamp generally date between 1906 to 1930s. The crock features a cobalt blue stamp of “6” indicating the gallon capacity. A patent stamp of “1915” is printed on the side and the “Red Wing Union Stoneware” stamp along with the company’s logo is featured on the front. Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a prominent French painter and illustrator who became an iconic figure of the Art Deco movement. It also is showcased that he wrote a small statement in German, handwritten at the top of the piece. 167 - Carvel Hall Mid Century Cutlery Set Unique selection of a Carvel Hall cutlery set, perfect for use or collecting. This selection comes with 22 pieces in total comprising an assortment of different sized knives, pronged forks and a sharpener. Each of the items feature an ivory colored “Lustrex” plastic handle with a silver-overlay design. The blades (or utensil portions in general) are of stainless-steel design, making the items to be highly durable. Set comes with three larger serving knives and two larger pronged forks. Additionally, the set comes with eight steak knifes and eight smaller forks used for tableware versus serving. Carvel Hall cutlery was manufactured by Chas. D. Briddell, Inc. out of Crisfield Maryland. Originally founded as a blacksmith shop in 1895, the Briddell company especially came to fame in 1951 with the launch of the Carvel Hall steak knife. Tremendously successful, the knife reportedly grossed $1 million in sales within its first month. The most interesting and impressive fact about these knives is that they are part of the first widely available brand of steak knives ever made. Ironically the design concept that came out of a Christmas gift of a hand-carved letter opener that in turn inspired decoration for the dinner table setting. Prior to these knives, it was more common for blunt-ended table knives or work utility knives to be used, leading to difficulty in the cutting process or cleanliness when eating meat. The forepiece is smooth as is the stock at the wrist. All wood and metal are in need of restoration. Union Machine Co." was probably a trade name used by a U.S. distributor. This shotgun should not be fired before being checked by a gunsmith, and it may not be safe to use modern smokeless ammunition. 214 - Lot of 2 Feudal Japan Prints By Toyokuni III Unique selection of two vintage pieces of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display The two pieces are works from acclaimed Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada, most notably known as Toyokuni III. The pieces are based on artwork from the 19th century Edo-period Japan. One of the prints belongs to the “Allusions to the Zodiac Signs” series from the artist and it features a well-known kabuki actor named Kawarazaki Gonjuro holding a compass. The other piece is titled “A Calendar of Hit Comparisons with Picture Plays” and once again depicts a Kabuki scene, this time with historical actors Matsunaga Daizen and Kano no Yukihime. Toyokuni III (1786-1865) was once again originally known as Utagawa Kunisada before taking the name of his previous teacher and successor, Toyokuni II. He was the most commercially successful artist in 19th-century Japan. He is estimated to have designed between 20,000 and 30,000 distinct prints, primarily capturing the pulse of urban Edo through prints that focused on common life and (in this lot’s case) Kabuki Houses. These direct items are luxury blend textile prints involving a layer of silk treated and backed with cotton. This combination creates a soft, matte finish that allows colors to pop without the glare of pure silk. 218 - Art “Japanese Garden” by Louis Icart Unique selection of an antique piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “Le Jardin Japonais” or “Japanese Garden” and was produced by artist Louis Icart. This direct item is an offset lithograph print, based upon the original work from 1925. Rather than a full-sized landscape, the artwork depicts an intimate domestic scene where a woman and a child admire a miniature Japanese garden resting on an antique table. Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a prominent French painter and illustrator who became an iconic figure of the Art Deco movement. He is best known for his glamorous, sensuous, and often humorous etchings of women that “joie de vivre” (the joy of living) in the bubbly spirit of 1920’s Paris. He specifically specialized in “boudoir” art, intimate feminine scenes that weren’t necessarily scandalous but were rather often lighthearted and sensual. After World War I, Icart’s work became a visual antidote to the trauma of the trenches. “Le Jardin Japonais” is a direct example of this, establishing a “New Start” through the application of Art Deco and Romanticism. “Japonism” was also a movement that fascinated Paris in the 1920’s, as displayed here. The picture is framed and under glass with the overall presentation measuring 21” H x 25” W. The interior print measures approx. 10” H x 12” W. The artist’s signature is present in the lower right-hand corner of the print but it is most likely part of the stamped print. Each character holds unique mannerisms with a displayed backstory. Many true to life small items are also added to the statue, like coins, for authentic display. The artist’s signature is often found either hand etched into the mold, handwritten in ink pen, or both along with the year of the piece. Tom Clark Gnomes were first created in 1978 by Dr. Thomas F. 254 - Set of 2 Classic Tinplate Toys Excellent set of two classic tinplate toys, perfect for any vintage toy collector or enthusiast. - First selection is a Lever Action Car manufactured by Modern Toys, a well-known Japanese toy manufacturer. Being a great quality mid-century Japanese export, the car is constructed from lithographed tin metal and measures 4.5” H x 3” W x 5.5” D. Although it is approximated that the toy was produced somewhere in the late 60’s to early 70’s, the car represented is an early 20th-century vehicle, especially similar to a Ford Model T. - Second selection is a “Balky Mule”, a classic tin lithograph wind-up toy. Produced by the Louis Marx & Co. sometime during the 20’s and 30’s, this toy was made to mimic the “stubborn” behavior of a mule. When the internal clockwork mechanism is wound, the toy performs erratic movements. Car is in great condition for its age, with only very minor wear and bright color representation. Toy car has been tested and is in working condition. As there is different versions of this toy, this is toy is specifically the “Milk Delivery Wagon” variant that is widely considered a pre-WWII antique. As this item was produced by Louis Marx & Co., most of the later models featured an empty back portion of the wagon while this one holds six small silver-colored milk containers. The other notable unique feature is that there is a dog sitting next to the driver. The toy presents well as a rustic relic as it does hold some wear to it due to age. The mule is specifically missing hind legs and ears but it’s not directly noticeable unless one knows to look for those things. Item measures 4” H x 3.5” W x 9” D and is not formally tested. Each selection easily appears to be of a vintage age, displaying unique old-world landscapes through a blended paint design. It is directly unclear who the artist is but all three have very similar signatures easily suggesting that the same artist was involved. Also, the notation of “67” next to the signature gives each piece a dated stamp. All pictures are the same in size, measuring 15.5” H x 12” W in frame and the interior measuring approx. 11.5” H x 8” W. 292 - “Gargantua et Pantagruel No. 21" By Louis Icart Unique selection of a vintage piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “Gargantua et Pantagruel No. 21” and is a photogravure of Louis Icart’s work. “Gargantua et Pantagruel” itself is a classical grouping of five satirical novels written in the 16th century by the French author Francois Rabelais. It chronicles the absurd, larger-than-life adventures of two giants: Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. The book’s reputation with its humor made it a perfect subject for artist Louis Icart and in 1936 he translated Rabelais’ rough, medieval energy into his own sophisticated Art Deco aesthetic. This direct piece is labeled “No. 21” referring to it being a displayed work amongst a gathering included within the novels. This piece directly showcases a battle scene with a knight on a large white horse and a smaller battle sequence situated below. Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a prominent French painter and illustrator who became an iconic figure of the Art Deco movement. He is best known for his glamorous, sensuous, and often humorous etchings of women that “joie de vivre” (the joy of living) in the bubbly spirit of 1920’s Paris. He specifically specialized in “boudoir” art, intimate feminine scenes that weren’t necessarily scandalous but were rather often lighthearted and sensual. After World War I, Icart’s work became a visual antidote to the trauma of the trenches. The picture itself is a “Photogravure” print that is framed, matted and under glass. 296 - Firearm Antique Deringer In Frame Unique selection of an antique Philadelphia Deringer set within a framed encloser, perfect for collecting and historical display. The Philadelphia Deringer is an iconic pocket pistol invented by American gunsmith Henry Deringer in 1825. Though this type of gun was originally manufactured in his Philadelphia shop, the weapon’s massive popularity led to widespread copying as Henry himself failed to file a formal patent. It was so popular that it eventually became the generic name for any small, concealable, single-shot handgun. The gun works within a single-shot, muzzle-loading system and measures overall approx. 8” in length. These guns are typically made with walnut stock and “German Silver” accent (copper-nickel alloy). It is placed in decorative form within a shadow box frame (that is not intended for easy opening). Overall frame measures approx. 10” H x 15” W. One item of notation is that directly authentic Henry Deringer pistols were formally stamped with “Deringer Philadel” on the lockplate and barrel. Once again as Deringer failed to file a patent, other gunsmiths of the era produced the same gun without the direct formal wording.
