Lakewood Par 3 History

Lakewood Par 3 Golf Course was family owned and operated from 1966 to 2006. It was built on the Kinley farm in High Point on Old Thomasville Road. Grady and Nannie Kinley bought the 12 acre tract in 1935 and built their home there. In the early 1960s Bill Kinley and brother Richard Kinley went up in an airplane to survey the land. Richard, a pilot, steered the aircraft as Bill hung out the window and took pictures. Bill used those photos to crayon sketch the course. The goal was to provide an income for their parents, Grady and Nannie Kinley, who still lived on the property. Bill and Richard studied other courses and learned all they could about building greens and implementing an irrigation system. After two years of painstaking work, the course opened in July 1966 charging customers 50 cents to play nine holes of golf. Hundreds of locals to the area remember playing their very first round of golf at Lakewood.

The golf course is a four generation labor of love. Lakewood customers have fond memories of visiting with Grady by the fire or on the back porch. Many had the privilege of sharing a round of golf with him. Nannie also spent countless hours in the club house, and she would even have customers knocking on her back door if the course was closed due to weather. She would tell them to go on and play and stop by the house to settle up and have a piece of pie. Bill’s son, Ronnie, and Richard’s son, Jerry, also played a key role in running the course. They could be found mowing, spraying greens, or in the lake retrieving lost balls. Bill and Richard also have a sister, Sara Leonard. All seven of Grady and Nannie’s grandchildren have worked at the course while growing up. More recently, Bill’s grandchildren had after school and summer jobs at the course. Bill decided to close the course in 2006 so he could relax and enjoy his retirement. His parents and brother are no longer living.

One of the unique features of the course is the club house, which was built in 1842 from forest pine beams, and oak logs constructed with wooden pegs. The Johnson family actually lived in this log cabin and raised seven children during the mid 1800s. The chimney still has the gray and blue granite stone that was used to cook meals and heat the house. There are also two original windows with hand blown glass. Grady Kinley used the cabin for feed storage before the course was built. Restrooms and a porch were added as the course was being built, but the building was left in its original state.

Many consider Lakewood Par 3 Golf Course a landmark in High Point. Just ask around and you will hear countless stories of days spent on the golf course.
