“Big Foot” – Ralph’s rendition of the famed Sasquatch (Did Ralph have first hand information?)
“Ass Tray” – After years of smoking, Ralph finally quit for good! You’re an ass if you can’t stop!
“One Million AD” – Image of a large ape-like figure wearing a loincloth and holding up a large rock set on a round base. The sculpture is supported on a four-legged table with a round top constructed by Ralph. (I guess Ralph thought by One Million AD, humans would have had to re-evolve!)
“To Hell With It” – Angry, naked, pregnant woman with rolling pin and broom. A gift to his daughter upon graduation from college. (Ralph just didn’t get it! Although gracefully accepted, it is more representative of their “generation gap” than her sentiments!)

Ralph Karol Selder
April 1920 - November 2005
A lifelong resident of New
Hampshire, Ralph Selder was born on April 30th 1920 in Hollis. Raised on a farm
by first generation Polish immigrants, Ralph attended school until the 8th
grade when the Great Depression forced him to devote his time to work. Despite
his lack of formal education, Ralph was very successful in his life endeavors.
He was a pilot during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Ralph
held a myriad of positions in trades that eventually lead to becoming a mechanical
engineer for the Gillette Company.
Ralph married and raised 4
children in Nashua. He worked hard and lived hard. He was a charismatic, tall,
handsome, man who lightened the rooms he walked into. A great thinker, master
storyteller, full of jokes, everyone listened when he belted out all the oldies
in his baritone voice. He was known and loved by many for his charm,
intelligence, hats, the twinkle in his eye and his ability to fix just about
anything.
After his children had grown,
Ralph used his everyday skills to express his creativity with the art of metal
sculpting. Out of the blue, he
began bringing home his completed works. His first accomplishment was a welded
metal Xmas tree complete with lights and miniature tool ornaments. His pieces
quickly evolved into intricate, beautiful works of art that reflected Ralph’s
many sides. Whimsical abstracts; folk art to lifelike detailed elegant
sculptures expressing his pride in his country and his admiration of beauty;
satirical pieces reflecting the humorous or tragic sides of Ralph;
fantastically imaginative pieces showcasing his genius and adept skills.
Welding stainless steel for hundreds of hours on end, Ralph created these
unique sculptures with a masterful artistic eye and the perfectionism of a fine
craftsman.
Ralph died in November 2005,
a year after his wife Stacia passed. They had celebrated nearly 55 years of
marriage. Although, Ralph’s work was displayed at various banks, libraries and
restaurants throughout New Hampshire and the recipient of several awards (1st
place Rockport Art Festival ~ 1988), none of his art was ever sold. This is the
first offering.
His children love his work
and have cherished it for decades. They feel this beauty should be shared in
our world, enjoyed and treasured by more than only his family.
