Item Description
Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird in Branch Decoration, Stamped “M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT . PA,” circa 1870, large ovoid jar with applied lug handles, decorated with a long-tailed bird perched in a branch of numerous leaves. Decoration covers a large portion of the front and exemplifies the highly artistic nature of much of the work of brothers Michael and Theophilus Miller. Cobalt highlights to maker’s and capacity marks. Cobalt brushed at handle terminals. A boldly-decorated example of Central Pennsylvania stoneware. Mint condition. H 14 1/4”.
