French Bras en L'Air Novelty timepiece
Item Description
C.1875, French, Mysterious "Bras en L'Air" timepiece, the lady pointing to the time with her hands, hours to the left and minutes to the right. Condition: Very good as-found condition; this clock has been in storage for the last 25 years, and the rear snails that raise the arms to indicate the time have a light coat of rust, and the entire movement will need cleaning before operation; we took the cob webs out before the foto. The porcelain hour scale has cracks at 2, 5 & 11 o'clock. Still, this is the way most serious collectors would like to find a rare clock, and this one is sure to command their attention. For reference see Sothebys Meraux sale, June 29, 1993, lot 81, where the cousin to this clock sold for $12,075; also see Derek Roberts' book, titled: Mystery, Novelty & Fantasy Clocks , page 93, figure 8-19 Ht 18.1" [46cm] Price includes 10% premium
