Remmey Stoneware Bank with Incised Bird

Outstanding and Extremely Rare Presentation Stoneware Bank with Incised Bird and Floral Decoration, Incised "A.R. / March 28 / 1874," attributed to Henry Harrison Remmey, or possibly Richard Clinton Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, 1874, ovoid bank with rounded foot, tall finial, and carved vertical slot in shoulder. Decorated on one side with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a long-necked bird with turned head, perched on a flowering branch, which arches over the top of the bird's head. Reverse decorated with a large incised four-petaled flower. Base incised with the cobalt-highlighted initials "A.R." along with the date "March 28 1874". Several presentation items for members of the Remmey family are known, and it is possible that the "A.R." on this bank refers to Agnes Remmey, the wife of potter, Richard Clinton Remmey. This bank is one of two incised bird banks produced by the Remmeys that we are aware of, and is certainly one of the finest examples of Remmey stoneware to surface in several years. Shallow chip to interior of slot. Areas of in-the-firing bubbling to cobalt. H 6 3/8".
