Item Description

Rare Glazed Shenandoah Valley Redware Syrup Jug, Incised "A. W. Bacher," Winchester, VA origin, circa 1880, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with incised shoulder, flared pouring spout, and applied strap handle, decorated with streaks of manganese under a clear lead glaze. Incised on underside "A. W. Bacher," referring to Shenandoah Valley master potter, Anthony Weis Bacher. A highly unusual form in Bacher redware. This syrup jug has never been sold, having descended in the Bacher family to its present owner. Reglued 1 3/4" sliver at rim. Other light wear to rim and spout. Small base chip. H 8 1/2".
