PA Redware Lion Figure
Item Description
Exceptional Glazed Redware Figure of a Lion, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled, lead-glazed figure of a standing lion with highly-detailed and expressive face having an open mouth revealing incised teeth and a protruding tongue. Figure rattles when shaken. A highly desirable form in American figural redware. Animal figures of this type are rarely found in such remarkable condition, due to their fineness and probable use as child's toys. Provenance: Consigned by a Florida gentleman, whose father purchased it during the 1970's. Damage to ears. Otherwise mint condition. H 5 1/2" ; Length 5".
