Item Description

Very Rare and Important Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Chicken Scene, Stamped "FENTON & HANCOCK / ST. JOHNSBURY VT," circa 1860, cobalt-decorated with a detailed scene of six finely slip-trailed chickens, underscored by a slip-trailed foliate design. The two larger chickens facing each other with pronounced combs may represent the roosters of the yard, while the other smaller chickens could be seen as the hens. The birds are depicted in a folky manner, yet with a certain sense of realism as a depth to the scene is created through superimposing chickens over one another. They are presented as one might observe them on a farm, standing about, one with its head turned, and another feeding from a wooden watering dish. Maker's mark and capacity mark highlighted in cobalt. A remarkable and skillfully-rendered design. Excellent color. Spout and base chips. Thin 1 1/2" line at top of handle, which does not go through. Height 17".
