An MGM star, Novarro was enormously popular in silent film, especially after the death of Valentino. (Tragically, he was tortured and murdered in 1968 by two brothers who believed him to have had a fortune hidden in his home. They made off with a $20 bill.) The letter thanks the recipient for Christmas greetings, and it closes with the following: "I have gone to the parking lot several times, but haven't seen you there. However, I will keep on trying." Also interesting is that there is an electric light kit installed in this banjo behind the resonator -- simply clamped onto the center bar, not drilled into the instrument body at all. Belonged to James A. Gaylard. Banjo is in good structural condition. Inner binding on resonator is chipping along with some edge wood. And binding along the neck is coming up. Hard case has "SOUTHERNERS" on bottom side, and "JIMMY GAYLARD, St Petersburg, Fla., Rex MacDonald's Silver Kings, Burk's Coliseum Orchestra" on the lid. Fabulous piece of St. Pete history. (Interesting side note: Ude's friend was Frank Portnoy, a small-time mobster who operated an illegal gambling club in California, peripherally connected to the Purple Gang. 166 - 1928 World Series Baseball Signed by Cardinals Spalding Official National League baseball, alleged to have been purchased from the estate of silent film star Francis X. Bushman in the 1960s. The baseball is purported to be the winning ball of the 1928 World Series, though such a claim would indeed be a darned difficult thing to prove. The ball, based on its markings, and red and black stitching, was made only between 1928-1933. It is signed by several Cardinals players (the Cards were swept by the Yankees in that series, and Babe Ruth made the catch that ended the last game) -- using a blacklight, we were able to identify the following players: Frankie Frisch, Jim Bottomley, Chick Hafey, Wattie Holm, Ernie Orsatti and Jimmy Wilson, and a couple of others. But the ball is heavily toned, and the signatures are very difficult to decipher. It is possible that some sort of restoration could be done to make them more legible and to remove the toning, but that is up to the buyer. The signatures are -- for what it's worth -- guaranteed to be authentic.

250 - Collection of Early American Signatures from 1809 Large bound Baltimore Evening Post volume of the entire year of 1809, beginning January 2 and ending December 30. Front endpaper has accession bookplate from the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Inside the front cover, pasted around an oval photo of George Washington, is a most remarkable collection of cut autographs. These are NOT printed signatures, but live, inked signatures -- different types and textures of paper, different tones, etc. The signatures, starting from the top, include the following: Robert Treat Paine (Continental Congress), Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, [illegible], Rob Morris (Continental Congress), Henry Clay (Senator), Roger Sherman (Congress), John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Charles Carroll (Continental Congress), Stephan Hopkins (Rhode Island governor), Sam Huntington (Connecticut governor), Gerard Hopkins (a Baltimore businessman), William McMechen (Baltimore County court justice), Roger Taney (Maryland attorney general), and Washington Irving (author). In the bottom center is the only printed matter on the page -- a letter by Horatio Nelson. A curious mixture of rather unremarkable individuals with some of the most prominent Americans in the history of the country. It has been suggested that the collection was assembled by a newspaper employee around 1810-1820 -- someone with access to letters (such as letters to the editor) or signed documents on file that perhaps were going to be purged. In any case, it is unknown whether these signatures are all genuine, or if some are secretarially signed. None of them, though, are printed signatures. A partially worn engraving to the left of Washington's picture depicts an elderly black woman, on whose apron is written the name "Old Joice Heth," a P.T. Barnum character who was alleged to be the 161-year-old nurse of George Washington. One clue as to the possible assembler of this piece is an early 20th century bookplate just at the end of all the signatures. The bookplate reads "Ex libris Dr. Chr. Deetjen." Dr. Christian Deetjen, a Baltimore physician and X-Ray pioneer, and personal friend of H.L. Mencken, was quite the old book collector, and one of his hobbies was bookbinding. Volume measures 19-1/2" x 12-3/4". A fascinating collection, however it came to be.
