At an auction that had lots of 90% silver, some Liberty half dollars came up for bid. As the Auctioneer was coming down in price for an opening bid, I said: " How about $6" (That was my highest price I was willing to pay & held out no hope of winning as I have seen them go much higher in price than $6). Turned out that I was the only bidder and did win the half dollars to my surprise.
My Q is this: Was this bad etiquette on my part to start bidding on an unusual amount? I got the feeling the auctioneer didn't like it as he seemed to take 'extra' time to get a higher bid - asked for $6.25 at the end.

you offered up the best (and is it turns out only) bid for an item and he got a %age of that vs zero.

Everyone it seems, won in some small way. No one it seems, conquered the world that day. I say it was 100% fine.
