Tom, if you live close by, we have a number of wonderful auctioneering schools here in North Carolina. If cost is a concern, I highly recommend the auctioneering school held twice a year at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC. Two years ago, I attended this program and had the pleasure of studying under the extraordinary Ms. Josie Graves. "Miz Josie" is a legend and one of the feistiest nonagenarians that I know. Here's a clip about her: http://youtu.be/HheM19uCAKQ.

According to Ms. Josie, for an auctioneer to develop a chant that is audible and understandable, there is no substitute for "practice, practice, and more practice". I've yet to take the state exam but I still practice my chanting drills whenever I have a spare moment. There's so much more to auctioneering than learning a few filler words and all of the auctioneers that I've met have been supportive of me by sharing their wisdom and encouragement. Keep asking questions and good luck!
