GPAnalysis: An unsigned, non-Ditko Collection xx sold for $xx in xx. Ditko Collection Census: This is the only certified Steve Ditko Collection copy. This is the first standalone mag dedicated to the adventures of Steve Ditko's iconic Mr. A, following the character's debut in Witzend #3 (1967) and a handful of appearances in various small-circulation fanzines including Eon #3, Graphic Illusions #1, The Collector #26, and Comic Crusader #s 6 and 13. Mr. A, the Objectivist ass-kicker who served as a mouthpiece for Ditko's interest in Ayn Rand's philosophical concepts, has developed a cult following among comics cognoscenti over the years, depite the character's scant and patchy publication history. While some Ditkophiles say Mr. A is a-ok, others find his black-and-white view of morality, and Ditko's Randian soapboxing, harder to take. Comics Journal editor Dan Thompson denounced Mr. A as "propaganda – and badly done propaganda at that – for a frightening philosophy." But despite the qualms of critics, the white-clad crusader continues to haunt the margins of popular consciousness. Mr. A's notoriety was boosted by the runaway popularity of the Watchmen's vigilante, Rorschach, who writer Alan Moore conceived as a sort of ultra-violent, unhinged mashup of Ditko's characters the Question and Mr. A. Although Ditko seldom looked back on past accomplishments, he never gave up on Mr. A, saying that "He's one character from the past that I'd like to see in the present and the future." Mr. A's fans have been waiting for ages for a Mr. A revival, and the Ditko Estate has plans to finally make this tantalizing prospect a reality. Asked if fans can expect a Mr. A renaissance, Steve Ditko's nephew, Patrick Ditko, says: "Yes for sure! There are 3 color issues of Mr A coming soon! Until the final details are worked out, a strong tease will need to suffice." Like a superheroic Dirty Harry, Mr. A is tailor-made for the silver screen, and we've got a feeling that one of these days the character will explode in the public consciousness like a black-and-white bombshell. This copy of his eponymous debut is without question the most desirable Mr. A mag on the planet – not only is it Ditko's personal copy, but it's also the sole Signature Series copy in existence (CGC's president Matt Nelson says he's not sure how many Signature Series Ditko books exist, but he believes it's fewer than ten, and possibly only "a couple").***************************** Enjoying the Ditko Sale?
