Item Overview

Description: VITALY DLUGY (Russian, 1934-1990) Original Painting Oil and Gouache on Board. Titled "Three Pomegranates". Signed and dated upper center "V.Dlugy,84". Measures 29" x 24" framed. Officially employed as art director of the Jewish Chamber Music Theater in Moscow between 1976 and 1980, Vitaly Dlugy participated in all major non-conformist exhibitions in Moscow. In 1980, he was forced to emigrate to the United States where he resided in New York. Some Dlugy's works were returned to Russia for a personal exhibit in the Tretyakov Gallery in 1994. His life and death inspired the critically acclaimed modern Russian novelist and short-story writer Ludmila Ulitskaya to write her popular novel "The Happy Funeral" ("Veselie Pokhoroni"), for which she was awarded the Booker Prize in 1997.
