Vintage Persian Tabriz Mahi Fish rug was hand knotted in Iran of 100% natural wool on a cotton foundation. It is 50+ years old, has medium wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. Beautiful colors with excellent quality, showing signs of abrash (fading) due to the use of antiquated vegetable dyes. No holes or repairs. Traditional rug from Tabriz artists, crafted using the finest weaving techniques. Hand-knotted and constructed from 100 percent wool with 100 percent cotton foundation. Acquired from a Virginia estate. Clean and ready to be enjoyed. Recent embargoes by the U.S. against Iranian goods should cause the value of these rugs to increase.

  • Amongst the most classic and popular patterns in Tabriz rugs is the Mahi design, which is also known as the Fish design. The Tabriz Mahi rugs are very common and are typically found in most Persian rug stores. In fact, this design is so popular that it is also very common to find it in imitation rugs from China and India. Most Mahi pieces are standard sized Tabriz rugs with a large center medallion and the main colors are typically beige, navy blue, and 3 shades of red, which are burgundy, cherry, and rose. While the exact origins of the Mahi design may be somewhat unsettled, what is fairly widely accepted is that the Farsi-speaking region of Western Iran and the country of Turkey represent the locations where this particular style of rug-making does in fact have its most definitive roots. Perhaps a bit of a slightly stronger case can be made for Iran, given that the city of Herat, which was initially located in Persia but now resides within Afghanistan’s borders, provided obvious eponymous inspiration for the naming of the very design itself. Regardless of any quibbles concerning direct national or cultural lineage, this general area’s role in and contribution to the development and popularization of the Mahi pattern is laudable and, again, undisputed.
