Sussel-Washington Artist (Southeastern Pennsylvania, late 18th c.), highly important ink and watercolor fraktur Taufwunsch for Petter Schollge (b. 1779, Berks County), 6 1/2" x 8", frame - 10 1/2" x 12". Given his name by legendary Philadelphia antiquarian, Arthur Sussel, this unknown artist's work has risen to iconic status among folk art collectors and museums alike. Sussel's example of"Ledy Waschingdon" and"exselence Georg General Waschingdon" sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries, October 24, 1958. Since that time, other Sussel-Washington works have seldom come to market. A similar Taufwunsch (baptismal wish) for Maria Gertraud sold at a benefit auction for the Historical Society of Cocalico Valley, May 26, 1980, lot 337, and was subsequently sold at Sotheby's, Visual Grace: Important American Folk Art from the Collection of Ralph O. Esmerian, January 25, 2014, lot 617. A Sussel-Washington fraktur depicting Adam and Eve was sold at Pook & Pook, The Pioneer collection of Dr. and Mrs. Donald Shelley, October 8, 2004, lot 51. The present example is arguably the finest in private hands and rivals that in any institution. Provenance: the collection of Albion P. Fenderson, Modesto, California.

Christian Baptismal Wish

Oh dear child, you are baptized in Christ's death, who has with his blood bought you from hell. This is a reminder and lasting remembrance. After your baptism, I wanted to give you this, grow up to honor God and to your parents' joy, and be useful to your neighbors and to your salvation.

Peter Scholl was born the 5th September 1779 and baptized by Pastor Conrad Reihm. Baptismal sponsors were the father Peter Scholl and his honorable wife Susanna Dorothea Scholl. He was born in Pine Grove Township in Berks now Schuylkill County in America.
