Grass’s last years were surrounded by controversy when it was revealed that as a teenager, he had served as a soldier in the Nazi Waffen-SS, a fact that Grass had kept hidden for more than 60 years. A copy of the American edition of his first book, The Tin Drum, translated by Ralph Manheim. Pantheon Books, 1961-62, Book Club edition. Signed by Grass on the half-title. In a slightly worn, glassine covered dust-jacket; internally fine.
