Roman, late Republic to early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A sophisticated ring set with a hand-carved nicolo intaglio depicting Eros (Roman Cupid), the infant-form god of love, affection, and desire. Eros faces nude towards the lefthand periphery of the intaglio while supporting a shepherd's crook with his right shoulder and holding a dangling bunch of grapes in his left hand. The ancient stone exhibits a dark, opaque base with white stone on top while the Neoclassical 79.9% silver ring setting - covered in 17.8% gold gilding - provides a pop of color and opulence to the accessory.   • Ancient stone set in a Neoclassical ring to be wearable. Nicolo intaglio is ancient; ring setting is modern. Minor abrasions to intaglio with softening to finer details, otherwise intact and excellent. Great smoothness on intaglio.
