R.B. Taney Twice Signed Legal Document as a Young Lawyer in Frederick Co.

1p, measuring 7.5" x 12.5", Frederick County, Maryland, dated Ca. June 1, 1805. Signed "R.B. Taney" twice, at the conclusion and on verso with docketing. A legal document recording a case filed for Daniel Smith v. Henry Cronise, with Taney acting as Smith's attorney. With flattened folds and small separations at edges. Light toning throughout. Mounting remnants on verso. Boldly signed. The document argues that Smith is still owed a debt which Cronise has refused to pay. Reading in part:

"Henry Cronise late of Frederick County yeoman was summoned to answer unto Daniel Smith in a plea that he render unto him fifteen pounds five shillings…the said Henry by his certain bill obligatory did promise & oblige himself his heirs executors and administrators to pay or cause to be paid unto the said Daniel…to be paid at or before the first day of June…Nevertheless the said Henry…hath hitherto altogether refused…Wherefore the said Daniel Smith he is the worse and hath damage to the value of fifty pounds current money and therefore he brings suit and so forth and the said Daniel brings here into court the bill obligatory aforesaid sealed with the Seal of the said Henry which testifies the debt…"

Roger B. Taney (1777-1864) was admitted to the bar in 1799 at Annapolis and served one year in the Maryland House of Delegates before settling down in Frederick, Maryland, to practice law. He returned to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1816, when he was elected to the state senate. Taney later served as chief justice from 1835 to 1864; he had a brilliant lifetime legal track record and is best known for orchestrating a single judicial decision, Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857).
