East Asia, Japan, ca. mid-20th to 21st century CE. An intricately carved okimono statue made from fossilized mammoth ivory, depicting the goddess Guanyin (Kannon) in flight over a village. Guanyin presents a flower to a girl while a young boy plays a flute on the back of a water buffalo. Guanyin, known as Kannon in Japan, a Buddhist Bodhisattva and goddess of mercy, is revered for her compassion and kindness. She is believed to grant children to childless couples, protect children from harm, and shield them from pain, suffering, fear, and danger. Size: 3.2" L x 0.75" W x 7.75" H (8.1 cm x 1.9 cm x 19.7 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
