East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to early Republic era, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wooden sculpture of Guanyin, seated in the royal ease posture, with one leg folded on the pedestal and the other resting on the lotus petal base. Her right hand is extended in the abhayamudra, a gesture symbolizing reassurance, blessing, and protection. Her hair is styled in a topknot beneath her crown, and a short shawl with flowing ribbons drapes around her shoulders. Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, is revered in Mahayana Buddhism as the embodiment of unconditional love and kindness. Originally venerated as the male bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in India, Guanyin evolved into a female figure in Chinese culture, symbolizing maternal care and protection, offering relief to those in distress. Surprisingly lightweight, this statue is likely carved from foxglove-tree wood (Paulownia tomentosa). Size: 14" L x 12" W x 24" H (35.6 cm x 30.5 cm x 61 cm)
