Author: Lew Wallace - Lewis "Lew" Wallace was an American lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, territorial governor and statesman, politician and author. Wallace served as Governor of the New Mexico Territory at the time of the Lincoln County War and worked to bring an end to the fighting.

Of his novels and biographies, he is best known for his historical novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" (1880), a bestselling book since its publication, and called "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century." It has been adapted four times for films.

Condition / Notes: This is a scarce limited edition of the author's first book, signed and inscribed by Lew Wallace. This is number 21 of 250 copies. Inscription on preliminary page of first volume reads "Very respectfully, / Lew Wallace, / Nov. 7, 1898."

Antique set is bound in original decorative suede bindings with stamped pictorial designs. Both volumes display chipping to spine cover. Second volume shows small tears along fore edge of front cover. Books are tightly bound, with patterned endpapers and gilt top edges. Pages are clean, crisp and bright Profusely illustrated with vignettes and plates by Eric Pape. Plates, printed in gray, blue, tan, and other tones, have captioned tissue guards.

These volumes are preserved in protective plastic covers.
