This octavo volume is a late 19th-century school textbook titled A Brief History of the United States, authored by Joel Dorman Steele, Ph.D., F.G.S., and Esther Baker Steele, Lit.D., as part of the Barnes's Historical Series. The work was published by the American Book Company with offices in New York, Cincinnati, and Chicago. The book is bound in the publisher's original tan cloth with elaborate decorative stamping in black and gold on the front board and spine. The front cover features stylized lettering and a central rectangular panel containing geometric and celestial motifs, along with the American Book Company logo on a banner. Internally, the volume contains numerous wood-engraved illustrations and maps, including a decorative frontispiece and an illustrated preface page with a classical vignette of a figure revealing a coastal sunrise. The preface outlines a pedagogical design based on epochs, maps, and detailed collateral notes intended to foster national patriotism. The title page bears the ABC monogram of the American Book Company.
