A Note on the Artist:
Marcel Janco, a pioneering Romanian and Israeli visual artist and co-founder of the Dada movement, integrated textile arts into his multidisciplinary career through costume design, stagecraft, and later, tapestries. Influenced by his father, a textile merchant in Bucharest, Janco brought a tactile sensibility to his early work at Zurich's Cabaret Voltaire, where he used materials like sack-cloth, twine, and burlap to create "primitive" masks and avant-garde costumes, including the iconic bishop dress for Hugo Ball. His commitment to bridging the gap between fine art and craftsmanship continued through his membership in the group Das Neue Leben, which advocated for the return of handicrafts to modern life. In his later years in Israel, Janco collaborated with other artisans to translate his abstract and geometric visions into large-scale tapestries, further cementing his role in merging modernism with traditional textile techniques.
