Lauren (Loren) Honyouti (Native American Hopi, b. mid-20th century CE). "Heheya Kachina," ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A superb cottonwood kachina carving featuring a case mask with painted zigzag lines, turquoise teardrop earrings, and a concha belt with a bighorn sheep horn tied to the side. The pedestal base includes a relief carving of Heheya Kachin-mana alongside other Hopi symbols. Executed in an ultra-realistic, sculptural style, this piece displays muted, softer colors achieved by diluting pigments or staining the wood directly. The base is signed "L. Honyouti." Honyouti began carving full-time in the early 1980s and is part of a multigenerational family of skilled kachina carvers. The Honyouti family is prominently featured in books on Hopi carving, including "Kachina Dolls" by Helga Teiwes and "The Art of the Hopi" by Jerry and Lois Jacka. Lauren Honyouti's work has been exhibited in galleries and has won awards through the Heard Museum and the Museum of Northern Arizona. Size: 4" L x 3.6" W x 10.6" H (10.2 cm x 9.1 cm x 26.9 cm)
